Resolution & image quality

The fully-stacked Exmor RS image sensor delivers 66.8 MP resolution and excellent image quality for landscapes, portraits, and wildlife, with reduced shadow noise and natural skin tones. It offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivities, supporting HDR across ISO 100-32000 for detailed images with less noise in night scenes. Stable and accurate auto white balance is achieved through a Visible Light + IR Sensor combined with deep learning-based illumination estimation, ensuring natural colour reproduction across varied lighting.

The updated D-Range Optimiser balances highlights and shadows with adjustable strength up to Lv8, lifting shadow detail in backlit scenes for more natural portraits. In-body stabilisation provides up to 8.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the periphery, reducing blur and maximising resolution, with enhanced performance when paired with compatible lenses and improved suppression of telephoto shake.

Upgraded format options include a lightweight RAW format, with a Compressed (HQ) RAW option added to the existing lineup. This provides smaller RAW files that still maintain high image quality, enabling more efficient continuous shooting. Three composite RAW modes are available: Pixel Shift Multi for extremely high-resolution composites, NR Shooting for low-noise images, and Shooting for HDR for a wider dynamic range. Extended RAW processing also uses deep learning to enhance image quality, offering Extended Hi-Res, which increases resolution up to approximately 270MP, and Extended NR, which delivers strong noise reduction while retaining full resolution detail.

Movie functionality

The α7R VI records full-frame 4K 60p video without cropping, with 4K 120p available for high frame rate capture, and supports 4:2:2 10-bit colour for high-quality output. It also records 8K 30p video using XAVC HS with 8.2K oversampling for high-resolution detail. Dual Gain Shooting improves dynamic range, reducing noise and preserving shadow detail for greater editing flexibility. S-Log3 provides smooth gradation for post-production, with S-Gamut3, S-Gamut3. Cine, S-Cinetone, and user LUT support for flexible colour workflows.

In-camera audio processing reduces background, wind, and lens noise, while optional 32-bit float audio via an XLR adaptor expands recording dynamic range. Real-time Recognition AF+ tracks humans, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles, improving subject reliability in video. Enhanced stabilisation reduces handheld shake, and breathing compensation helps maintain consistent framing during focus changes for smoother cinematic footage.
