The Top Loader Small can be used in multiple configurations. It functions as a protective camera insert inside Shimoda backpacks, integrating seamlessly with the Side Series, Action X, Explore, and Urban Explore systems. When used independently, it can be carried as a shoulder bag or sling using an optional strap, mounted to a backpack harness, or attached to a waist belt and worn as a hip pack. This modular design allows photographers to adapt quickly between travel, hiking, and active shooting environments without changing bags.

An expandable base section enables the Top Loader Small to extend downward, providing additional length for longer telephoto lenses while maintaining a compact profile when not in use. A front zippered pocket offers storage for small accessories such as lens caps, cleaning cloths, or filters.
