The added Phase Fresnel element allows this lens's weight to be reduced by 50% and the length by 16% compared to the previous F-mount 800mm f/5.6 lens. Along with three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and one Short-wavelength Refractive (SR) element, axial chromatic aberration and colour fringing is drastically reduced and you will have minimal ghosting. This also brings incredible detail forth to capture the finest feathers of a bird or the details of an aeroplane as it reveals itself through the clouds.

An impressive autofocus system is incorporated to capture fast-moving subjects accurately. It is designed with stepping motors (STM) that leave you with a smooth and quiet AF performance ideal for stills and video applications. This is especially beneficial when capturing timid wildlife. With the Optical VR, you can photograph handheld and it features suppressed focus breathing which allows you to track subjects that are moving and keep your angle of view consistent. The Vibration Reduction image stabilisation minimises camera shake by approximately 5 stops to photograph handheld even in low-light environments.

The long focal length brings the action right into your viewfinder. You also have the option to add the Z series 1.4x and 2x teleconverters which increases your reach to 1120 mm or 1600 mm. This won't affect your focus points and you will still enjoy a lightweight body.
