Nikon Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct is a fast and versatile lens designed for the Z-series mirrorless cameras. Its wider Z mount design has been adapted to this new lens, which features an advanced optical design and an exceptionally bright f/0.95 maximum aperture. This allows it to excel in low-light conditions and provide precise control over depth of field for isolating subject matter.

Like its predecessor, the lens has a manual focus design for fine-tuned control suitable for both photography and video applications. Its optical design incorporates a large-diameter ground aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion, resulting in high sharpness and accurate rendering. An ARNEO coat, Nano Crystal Coat and fluorine coat have also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for clean, colour-accurate imagery in strong lighting conditions.

The lens has been updated with an assignable Fn button for lens-based control over shooting settings and a top lens information panel for quick confirmation of aperture, focus distance and depth of field settings. Like other S-series Z-mount lenses, it also features a programmable control ring for intuitive adjustment over either aperture or exposure compensation.

The lens is slightly longer than a standard prime lens and is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, but is also compatible with DX models, where it provides an 87mm equivalent focal length. The exceptionally fast f/0.95 maximum aperture achieves an impressively shallow depth of field for dramatic selective focus effects and is beneficial in low-light conditions.

The lens’s optical design includes four extra-low dispersion elements to significantly reduce colour fringing and chromatic aberrations, resulting in greater clarity and colour rendering.

Three aspherical elements, including a large-diameter ground aspherical element, are used to significantly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion, resulting in high sharpness, clarity and accurate rendering. The optical design has also been optimised for wider apertures, minimising comatic aberrations and ensuring even sharpness across the frame.

ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are employed to prevent ghosting reflections and flare, thereby improving contrast and clarity in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls it from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating ensures consistently accurate colours and a fluorine coating repels dust, dirt and moisture.

A specialised electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability, particularly beneficial for fast continuous shooting rates. An 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a distinctly smooth bokeh quality that emphasises subject separation and depth.

A rotating tripod collar provides greater stability when using the lens on a tripod or monopod.

The manual focus approach allows working with subjects as close as 1.6 metres. Focusing operations are aided by an OLED information panel on the lens’s top, which displays focus distance, depth of field and aperture setting information to quickly and easily recognise lens settings and hyperfocal distances.

A programmable control ring is defaulted to adjust aperture settings, but can also control exposure compensation. An assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
