Keys to supreme 4K

Uniting 4K capability, intuitive controls, and handheld size for the first time, the Sony FDR-AX100 is a landmark in the enthusiast camcorder market, featuring:

  • ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens: Enjoy 29 mm wide-angle ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens fine-tuned for 4K video. Ideal for capturing grand landscapes, it also provides up to 12x optical zoom.
  • 1.0-type Exmor R CMOS sensor: Light-receiving area of this sensor is approximately 4.9 times larger than current sensors, which enhances image clarity, reduces noiseNOISEThe appearance of random pixels scattered over a photo, similar to the grain effect seen in film photography, which degrades photo quality almost as if it is stained. It occurs when taking photos in low-light conditions, with very slow shutter speeds on high sensitivity (ISO) settings. It is caused by amplification done by the sensor when high ISO settings are used. You can counteract digital noise by lowering the sensitivity (ISO) setting of your camera - the lower the ISO setting, the lower the noise in the image. Typically cameras with larger sensors (like full-frame cameras) will inherently produce less noise due to larger pixels on the sensor., and enables extraordinary background defocusing.
  • Advanced BIONZ X image processing engine: An evolved BIONZ X engine achieves more lifelike images, and enables the addition of new features that take advantage of faster processing.

Intuitive controls to shape your vision

  • The lens ring enables smooth, natural adjustment of focusing or zooming depending on which mode is selected.
  • 5.1ch Dolby surround sound recording capability lets you record professional sound, to bring out the full potential of your movies and bring viewers into action.
  • See your shot accurately, even in direct sunlight with this advanced high dynamic range Tru-Finder OLED viewfinder.
  • The manual dial and buttons on the side of the body allow swift and easy adjustment of IRIS (apertureAPERTUREAperture, shutter speed and ISO form what is known as the exposure triangle in photography. Aperture refers to an opening inside the lens, similar to the iris of your eye, that changes in diameter to control the amount of light that enters a camera. Aperture is expressed in f-stops: the lower the number, the larger the aperture, e.g. f/1.4 is larger than f/8. A larger (or wider) aperture allows more light to pass through the lens to the sensor (film) as a picture is taken, particularly useful in low-light conditions. A larger aperture also produces a shallower depth-of-field, and thus more background blur.), GAIN/ISO ISO Exposure is controlled by three elements: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. The ISO speed determines how sensitive a camera's sensor is to incoming light. A higher ISO speed absorbs more light, resulting in a brighter exposure, however, a higher ISO also results in more digital noise in low-light conditions. Cameras with larger sensors (like full-frame cameras) typically have higher ISO speed capability and produce less digital noise at high ISO settings. Digital cameras include a control for adjusting ISO speed, some of which can be set to adjust automatically in combination with certain other exposure settings. ISO is indicated in numbers usually starting at 100 and going upward (200, 400, 800, 1600 etc.) doubling in sensitivity each time. Most cameras also indicate 3rd stop intervals (100, 125, 180, 200 etc.)and shutter speedSHUTTER SPEEDAperture, shutter speed and ISO form what is known as the exposure triangle in photography. Shutter speed is the length of time that a single frame is exposed for, more specifically how fast the shutter opens and closes to permit light entering the lens, to reach the sensor. A slow shutter speed means a longer exposure time useful for motion blur like the silky look of flowing water, whereas a fast shutter speed means a shorter exposure time useful for freezing the appearance of motion in images like a hummingbird in flight. It is measured in seconds starting at 1 second and halving our doubling in time. For example: 1/2s, 1/4s and 1/8s are all fractions of a second with 1/2s being the longest exposure time, 1/4s half of that and 1/8s another half etc..
  • Four built-in graduated ND filters control the light entering the lens, giving you the ability to produce beautiful bokehBOKEHPronounced: /ˈboʊkɛ/, /ˈboʊkeɪ/ [boh-kay] or /ˈboʊkə/ [boh-kə] Originating from the Japanese word Boke (ボケ), meaning 'blur' or 'haze', it refers to the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. It has also been defined as the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. Bokeh depends on various aspects of lens design. Aperture design has the largest effect on Bokeh, and generally a lens with a more rounded aperture produces a more pleasing, natural Bokeh. (even in sunny conditions).

Experience the XAVC S advantage

  • Support for HD high bit-rate: Adapted from the popular professional format, XAVC S is the supreme consumer standard for recording 4K/HD movies. With support up to HD 50Mbps, you can record high-resolution movies even in a shot with heavy movement.
  • From scene to screen: With a range of 4K Ultra HD TVs and projectors, Sony supports 4K from the record button to the play button.
  • AVCHD logo - Shoot cinematically: With Full 1080 HD at 50p or 24p, you can make the aesthetic choice to capture film-like motion in your videos.

An enriched Full HD experience

Enjoy super-sampled Full HD playback on your HD TV, which uses the surplus of 4K data to automatically down-convert 4K footage to Full HD. To crop a 4K image to Full HD, simply trace your finger on the camcorder's LCD screen to define the area.
