Focus breathing is effectively reduced for smooth movie imagery, and Linear Response MF allows precise manual focusing for maximum sharpness and resolution. Critical focus for high frame rate 4K 120p/FHD 240p recording is easy, and the entire system operates with minimal noise and vibration.

A number of innovations contribute to outstanding resolution and bokeh, including a new 11-blade circular aperture and two precision XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements that effectively suppress onion-ring bokeh. Careful layout and the use of resin barrel parts have resulted in a lens that measures 103.8 x 200mm and weighs just 1340g. That’s small and light enough for smooth handheld shooting. Internal zoom and optimised balance make it ideal for indoor events, without the need for lens changes that can interrupt the flow.

With a maximum magnification of 0.2x and minimum focus distances of 0.4m at wide and 0.74m at telephoto, close-up performance is superb. Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. An internal zoom mechanism minimises centre of gravity shift so gimbal mounting is easy, and the breathing compensation 6 and Active Mode image Stabilisation functions provided in compatible α bodies are supported.

Robust and reliable in the field

Buttons and switches sealed with silicone gaskets, a rubber ring that seals the lens mount, an internal zoom mechanism, and other measures prevent the incursion of dust and moisture even in challenging outdoor conditions. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.

Professional control and reliability

Operability is enhanced by an aperture ring with click ON/OFF and lock switches, three assignable focus hold buttons, and a DMF switch that enables temporary switchover to manual focus while using AF. Ample clearance is provided for the camera grip. The lens accepts standard 95mm filters, and the tripod foot has 1/4” and 3/8 ” screw holes.
