A versatile wide-angle zoom, the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Lens from Panasonic is a 16-36mm equivalent lens that blends optical excellence with a durable, refined physical design for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Designed in collaboration with Leica, this lens employs a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to realise sharp and clear imagery with controlled fringing and aberrations, and a Nano Surface Coating also helps to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and colour accuracy. The durable metal lens body is splash, dust, and freezeproof for use in trying environmental conditions, and a fast 240 fps autofocus drive suits both photo and video shooting in a variety of working situations.

Leica Wide Angle Zoom

Designed to shine even under adverse weather conditions, this wide-angle combines nimble mobility with legendary LEICA Lens performance. From ultra-wide-angle 8mm landscapes through 18mm in close-in spaces, the corner-to-corner clarity of this LEICA DG lens expresses every detail, even in low light [f/2.8-4]. And it accommodates 67mm filters for greater creativity in both photos and videos.

Features

  • Micro Four Thirds System
  • 16-36mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • ApertureAPERTUREAperture, shutter speed and ISO form what is known as the exposure triangle in photography. Aperture refers to an opening inside the lens, similar to the iris of your eye, that changes in diameter to control the amount of light that enters a camera. Aperture is expressed in f-stops: the lower the number, the larger the aperture, e.g. f/1.4 is larger than f/8. A larger (or wider) aperture allows more light to pass through the lens to the sensor (film) as a picture is taken, particularly useful in low-light conditions. A larger aperture also produces a shallower depth-of-field, and thus more background blur. Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • One Aspherical ED and One UHR Element
  • Three Aspherical and Two ED Elements
  • Nano Surface Coating
  • Splash, Dust, and Freezeproof Design
  • Rounded 7-Blade Diaphragm

The Ultimate in Optics

With a Leica DG Lens, you shoot with the ultimate in optical quality and performance. Each lens meets and exceeds the strict quality standards set by Leica Camera AG. Thanks to the sophisticated, pro-level design of these lenses, distortion is minimised to render brilliant, edge-to-edge clarity and detail in all your images.

Defy the Elements

With its splash/dust/freezeproof construction*, this durable lens is also tough enough to withstand heavy field use in nearly any weather or location. The system inside is protected from sand, rain and temperature. Now there's nothing holding you back from capturing the creative nature, landscape and other shots you want.

*The lens supports this feature in conjunction with splash/dustproof Lumix cameras. Splash Proof is a term used to describe an extra level of protection this lens offers against exposureEXPOSUREExposure is controlled by three elements: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Achieving the correct exposure is similar to collecting rain in a bucket, up to an optimum level. The rate of rainfall is out of your control (light), yet you can control these three factors: the bucket’s width (lens aperture), the duration you leave it in the rain (shutter speed), and how effective your bucket is in collecting rain (ISO). These three elements work together to control the amount of light per unit area, preventing underexposure (too dark) or overexposure (too bright), giving you a natural looking image. to a minimal amount of moisture, water or dust. Splash Proof does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to direct contact with water.

Video Support

With the Leica DG Varia-Elmarit 8-18mm lens, you will experience smooth aperture changes without sudden jumps in exposure during video capture, its silent design delivers enhanced audio capture in any scene. Just as reliably, its stunning AF performance records excellent 4K video, where precise focusing is especially essential.

Nano Coatings

Reduce unwanted ghosting and flaring for clarity with the Panasonic’s Nano Surface Coating. Developed by Panasonic, this ultra-thin coating reduces bothersome reflections across the entire light spectrum. The result: Crystal-clear pictures even when shooting a light source in the dark.

The Inside Story

The exceptional H-E08018 lens comprises 15 elements in 10 groups:

  • aspherical Extra-Low Dispersion lens
  • aspherical lenses
  • Extra-Low Dispersion lenses
  • Ultra High Refractive Index lens

The Aspherical (ASPH) Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) lens helps reduce size and weight, for high-resolution, high-contrastCONTRASTThe difference between areas of different brightness levels in a photograph: A high-contrast image has a greater difference between light and dark areas, whereas a low-contrast image has a narrow range of tones. Contrast is used to direct a viewer’s attention to a photographer’s subject either with colour contrast (bold versus duller colours) or tonal contrast (bright versus darker tones). images from corner to corner. ASPH lenses also reduce size and weight, effectively preventing spherical and distortion aberration.

ED lenses correct chromatic aberration rendering sharp, high-contrast images with clear colours from corner to corner.

An Ultra-High Refractive Index (UHR) lens improves optical performance, reduces size and weight and achieves uniform image quality from the centre to the edges of the image.

MTF Chart

For lenses capable of compensating for distortion, the horizontal axis of the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) shows the distance from the centre of the corrected image.
