NEW 51-POINT AF WITH IMPROVED PERFORMANCE, EVEN IN LOW LIGHT

The D7200’s new Advanced Multi-CAM 3500 II autofocus sensor module offers strengthened capabilities. Superior low-noise ability at high ISO of the AF sensor realizes incredible performance in low-light situations at -3 EV (ISO 100, 20ºC/68ºF) with one central focus point and at -2 EV or below (above -3 EV) with the other 50 points. Its 51 focus points cover a wide area of the frame in DX format, and the entire frame in 1.3×, while 15 cross-type sensors in the center feature higher detection strength. All 51 points are responsive at f/5.6, while one center point is compatible with f/8, for greater focusing performance even when using teleconverters. The outstanding focusing performance, wide AF coverage and lens compatibility make it easier to capture various scenes sharply, from low-lit interiors to sports or wildlife.

VARIETY OF AF-AREA MODES SELECTABLE TO MATCH YOUR SUBJECT

SINGLE-POINT AF

This is ideal when you want to achieve precise focus on a particular part of stationary subjects, such as portraits or landscapes. It can be conveniently employed when creating a portrait with the focus on an eye of the subject.

DYNAMIC-AREA AF

Suitable for capturing moving subjects. Select one of 51 points as a priority focus point. If the subject briefly leaves this selected point, the camera will focus based on information from the supporting points surrounding it. The number of points employed in focusing can be selected from 9, 21 or 51, depending on the situation, such as movement of the subject and predictability of the movement. For all these options, the camera uses the selected and surrounding points to recognize the subject as an area, and continues focusing on the moving subject accurately in combination with continuous-servo autofocus (AF-C) of lens servo.

3D-TRACKING

After you achieve focus on the subject with your selected focus point, the camera engages all 51 points and maintains tracking of the subject by automatically employing a new focus point according to the movement and changes of composition while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. This gives you more compositional freedom when shooting subjects moving erratically from side to side or top to bottom in the frame.

AUTO-AREA AF

Using information from all 51 focus points, the camera automatically detects the main subject and achieves focus on it. When a G- or D-type lens is employed, the camera detects a human subject's position by distinguishing foreground and background while recognizing human skin tone for improved subject acquisition, thanks to subject identification by Scene Recognition System.

THE POWER TO KEEP SHOOTING — NUMBER OF SHOTS INCREASED TO 100 (JPEG FINE/LARGE) AT 6 FPS IN CONTINUOUS SHOOTING

Capture action like never before. The rapid processing speed of EXPEED 4 and an increased buffer size allow the D7200 to keep shooting for longer in a continuous sequence. It can now take 100 frames(*1) at 6 fps(*2) when using JPEG fine/Large image size. If you need more speed, the camera shoots at up to approx. 7 fps(*2) in cropped 1.3x (JPEG or 12-bit RAW). And thanks to its mirror-balance mechanism, designed to minimize mirror slap, you can enjoy a stable viewfinder image even during continuous shooting of fast-moving subjects.

*1 The approximate number of pictures that can be stored on a 16 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s UHS-I SDHC card at ISO 100. Buffer capacity varies with scene recorded.

*2 Based on CIPA Guidelines. Note: Maximum frame rate in live view is 3.7 fps.

OPTICAL VIEWFINDER WITH APPROX. 100% FRAME COVERAGE FOR ENHANCED CLARITY AND VISIBILITY

The D7200’s viewfinder produces a brighter image with even more accurate color, while providing approx. 100% frame coverage in DX format. The organic EL display element used to show information below the image area in the viewfinder delivers a bright, high-contrast display with low power consumption. You can expect exceptional visibility outdoors, even with harsh backlighting.

UNLIMITED CONTINUOUS SHOOTING FOR CREATING VIRTUALLY SEAMLESS LIGHT-TRAIL

The D7200’s continuous shooting capability can be used to produce spectacular light-trail photography of star trails. Using a continuous release mode (CH or CL) and a shutter speed set at 4 s or slower, you can now keep shooting for as long as your media cards and battery life allow. With shorter-duration gaps between each exposure than when using the interval timer, you can then create a composite picture using third-party software that joins your shots almost seamlessly, to beautiful effect.

LONG BATTERY LIFE

The D7200 employs the EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery — as used in the D810, D800, D800E, D750, D610 and D7100 — delivering approx. 1,110 images* and movies of approx. 80 min.* When you want to record for longer, the optional EH-5b AC Adapter (EP-5B Power Connector required) and MB-D15 Multi-Power Battery Pack are also available as power sources.

MB-D15 MULTI-POWER BATTERY PACK (OPTIONAL)

One EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, six AA-size batteries (alkaline, Ni-MH or lithium), or EH-5b AC Adapter (requires EP-5B Power Connector) can be used. With one fully charged EN-EL15 loaded in the D7200 and another in the MB-D15, you can shoot up to approx. 2,220 frames. This battery pack comes equipped with AE-L/AF-L button, main/sub command dials, shutter-release button and multi selector, that are handy for vertical shooting. The magnesium alloy body, with sealing equivalent to that of the D7200 body, achieves superior dust-prevention and weather-resistant performance.

STANDARD ISO UP TO 25600 WITH SUPERB IMAGE QUALITY REALISED BY IMAGE-PROCESSING ENGINE EXPEED 4

The benefits of the new EXPEED 4 image-processing engine become clearly apparent in low light. Its advanced technology not only raises the D7200’s highest standard ISO to 25600, which is two full stops higher than its predecessor, while reducing noise, but it also helps preserve sharpness and textures even at relatively high ISO settings. This gives photographers more leeway to attain an optimum shutter speed and avoid subject blur, such as while shooting moving subjects when the volume of light drops. It also allows videographers to shoot clean footage, for example of nighttime streets, without the need for additional lights. For stills, the range is expandable to Hi BW1 and Hi BW2 (ISO 51200 and 102400 equivalent, respectively) in monochrome, further extending the scenes that can be captured.

PICTURE CONTROL WITH NEW FLAT OPTION

Nikon’s exclusive image creation system is even more powerful with the D7200. It offers a new level of customization and creative control for users to pursue their own imaging. The newly added Flat option provides richer information from shadows to highlights compared with other options. Even after adjusting this Picture Control option, there is less possibility of clipping in shadows and highlights, or of color saturation, resulting in images with beautiful color gradation and contrast. This is effective when you want to emphasize healthy skin tones, render finely detailed greens in landscape shots or reveal highlight details in flower petals. And not only for still images but also movies, the rich data obtained with Flat is useful for color grading, with less risk of oversaturation, blocked-up shadows or blown-out highlights.

NEW CLARITY PARAMETER & FINER CONTROL OVER YOUR IMAGES

When the Picture Control default settings give your images a look that’s close to what you want but not an exact match, you can finely adjust parameters such as contrast and saturation in 0.25 increments via the D7200’s Picture Control menu. You can also use the new clarity parameter to increase or soften your subject’s clearness in still images, all while maintaining the same details and saturation. If more detailed customization is desired, the Picture Control Utility 2 software (available for free download) lets you make minute adjustments using tone curves and sliders, while confirming the changes on a larger computer screen. Adjusted Picture Controls can be saved as custom Picture Controls, and downloaded to the D7200 via SD memory card to use when shooting still images and video, or applied to RAW processing in Capture NX-D.

SCENE RECOGNITION SYSTEM THAT ATTAINS HIGHLY PRECISE AUTO CONTROL, UTILISING THE 2016-PIXEL RGB SENSOR

Precisely determining the situation of the subject prior to shooting, Scene Recognition System delivers highly accurate auto control. With the D7200, it utilizes information from the 2016-pixel RGB sensor and image sensor to analyze brightness and color of the scene accurately and applies this to autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash and auto white balance control. Also, face-priority AF is available using face detection information from the image sensor during live view or movie recording. In playback zoom of a face in still images, the face can be zoomed in on, allowing easy confirmation of the focus.

INTELLIGENT BUILT-IN FLASH WITH COMMANDER FUNCTION WORKS I-TTL MAGIC

The D7200 incorporates a built-in pop-up flash with a guide number of approx. 12/39 (m/ft, ISO 100, 20ºC/68ºF). Featuring intelligent i-TTL flash control, it casts just the right amount of light to produce beautifully balanced fill flash with a subject that is darker than its surroundings. Its commander function allows it to trigger and control up to two groups of remote Speedlights (optional) wirelessly from the camera.

SPOT WHITE BALANCE THAT ENABLES PRESETTING OF THE WHITE BALANCE DURING LIVE VIEW

The D7200 comes equipped with a spot white balance function that allows you to easily acquire preset manual data based on a specific area of the frame you select during live view. This means that you can effectively achieve pinpoint white balance setting according to the selected subject or a part of it during live view without using a gray card. The spot white balance target for acquiring preset manual data can be moved around in the frame with the multi selector. This is possible even with a super-telephoto lens attached. It is convenient when shooting sports indoors or in stadiums where various types of lights are mixed.

BUILT-IN WI-FI AND NFC* FOR FASTER, EASIER COMMUNICATION

When you capture images with the power to wow others, it’s natural that you’d want to post them and get feedback — immediately. With the D7200’s built-in Wi-Fi function, sharing images to your online community has become easier. This lets you transfer your chosen images from the camera to your smart device simply and wirelessly. What’s more, the D7200 supports NFC*, enabling Wi-Fi connection by just touching the D7200 with the smart device.

*Compatible with Android OS only. Note: It may sometimes be difficult to establish a connection via NFC depending on the smart device or situation. In such a case, just connect in the regular way using Wi-Fi.

IN-CAMERA TIME-LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY WITH SMOOTHER EXPOSURE TRANSITIONS

Experiment with new forms of creative expression. For the first time in a Nikon DX-format camera, the D7200 lets you create beautifully rendered time-lapse movies entirely in-camera — and free from distracting flickering effects. This is due to Nikon’s exclusive exposure smoothing function, which allows you to shoot long sequences easily and comfortably using A mode even when brightness levels change significantly, such as the transition between darkness and light at sunrise or sunset, without the whiteout and blackout that may occur when M mode is chosen to avoid flickering. Exposure smoothing is also available for interval timer photography — which can now accommodate up to 9,999 shots and is able to deliver footage of up to approx. 6K quality, allowing you to add pan and zoom effects when editing the pictures into a Full-HD movie.

FULL-HD VIDEO FOR DIVERSE SHOOTING SCENARIOS

The D7200’s video capability provides the flexibility to meet the needs of multimedia users. The D7200 gives moviemakers the ability to record in two different formats — DX- and 1.3x-based. The latter allows you to capture a distant subject in a larger size, as well as record at 1080/60p, rendering smooth motion. The EXPEED 4 image-processing engine displays superb image quality across the entire ISO range from 100 to 25600, reducing the need for additional lighting. And if you’re planning color grading, the new Flat Picture Control is ideal for capturing footage, since it maintains shadow and highlight detail, rich tones and colors, and can reduce the risk of over-saturation even after grading. For the highest quality files, it’s also possible to transfer uncompressed video directly onto an external recorder via the optional HC-E1 HDMI Cable while recording simultaneously to the camera’s SD memory cards.

HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO CONTROL FOR MONITORING & ADJUSTING SOUND LEVELS WHILE RECORDING

The D7200 has a built-in stereo microphone, and sensitivity levels can be adjusted during movie recording, while monitoring on headphones connected to the camera. You can also set the audio frequency depending on what’s being recorded, while wind noise reduction is available when using the built-in microphone. For more professional-sounding results, connect the external ME-1 Stereo Microphone (optional) to record even clearer audio with minimized mechanical noise.

SIMULTANEOUS DISPLAY OF LIVE VIEW OUTPUT ON AN EXTERNAL DEVICE VIA HDMI

As the D7200 employs an HDMI mini-pin connector (Type C), simultaneous display of videos on the LCD monitor and an external monitor is available. During movie recording or movie live view, you can opt not to display the setting information which appears on the LCD, on the connected equipment via HDMI. This is convenient for viewing the entire frame, when you want to check the image on a large monitor connected via HDMI simultaneously while shooting. Also, it is possible to record uncompressed movie live view data directly to an external storage device (HDMI input video recorder). This allows professionals to edit uncompressed, high-quality movie footage on connected equipment.

SD MEMORY CARD DOUBLE SLOTS COMPATIBLE WITH HIGH-SPEED SDXC UHS-I MEMORY CARDS

The D7200 combines double SD card slots and supports SDXC UHS-I memory cards. A variety of recording options is available: "Overflow," "Backup" and "RAW primary, JPEG secondary" recording that lets you record RAW data and JPEG data separately to each card. You can also copy images between the two memory cards. When shooting D-Movie clips, you can select the slot according to the remaining capacity.
