Highly Agile Shooting in Diverse Situations

The lens is FX-format compatible, telephoto zoom lens with a fixed maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, realizes a lightweight body for a large-aperture lens featuring professional specifications. The employment of one fluorite and one HRI lens elements as well as magnesium-alloy parts makes the lens lighter than the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II by approximately 110 g. 

Weather-Resistant Performance for Shooting in Severe Environments

The lens structure provides weather-resistant performance with anti-dust and water-resistant capabilities. Movable parts and other sections are sealed to protect the inside of the lens against dust and water droplets. In addition, Nikon’s original fluorine coat applied to the extreme front surface, providing high antifouling performance and peel-resistant properties, contributes to more reliable shooting with easier maintenance. Fluorine coat also helps capturing clearer images due to its high antireflective effect. 

Enhanced Optical Performance 

The lens provides high-resolution images across the entire frame almost throughout the zoom range. The fluorite lens element featuring a high transmission rate and effective anomalous dispersion properties achieves outstanding chromatic aberration correction performance within the visible light spectrum, resulting in excellent image rendering. Six ED glass elements also reduce chromatic aberration that causes color fringing for stunning sharpness and contrast, while a High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element offering superb aberration-correction effects with a single element corrects curvature of field and spherical aberration simultaneously.

Furthermore, Nano Crystal Coat, an antireflective coating that employs an extra-low refractive index coating featuring ultra-fine, nano-sized crystal particles, effectively minimises ghost and flare effects even for difficult scenes such as when light enters the lens diagonally, producing clearer images. In addition to the high optical performance achieved through these factors, this lens enables exquisite image expression emphasising the main subject by utilizing a shallow depth-of-field and the large background blur that can be attained with a fast zoom lens featuring f/2.8 for up to 200 mm.

Improved Vibration Reduction that Incorporates Sport Mode 

SPORT mode, employed as an option of the VR function, is especially effective when shooting sports in which subjects are radically moving. A stable viewfinder image can be provided even when tracking randomly moving subjects during high-speed continuous shooting handheld. When SPORT mode is activated, continuous shooting frame rate and release time lag are not affected. Compared to the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, VR performance immediately after the power-on has been greatly improved with the VR function activated by half-pressing of the shutter-release button right after the power is turned on, instantly enabling a stable viewfinder image and fine resulting images with maximized blur-reduction effect. Also, in NORMAL mode, the VR system provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4 stops* faster.

Improved Autofocus & Tracking Performance  

Thanks to a new algorithm, the barrel vibration transmitted to the hands and sound caused when the AF drive starts/stops are remarkably reduced and suppressed. Also, AF tracking performance for continuous shooting of subjects with unpredictable movement, such as those slightly moving, moving at random speeds or approaching the camera at high speed, is improved. In addition, for enhanced AE control, an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism is adopted to attain more precise auto-exposure control even during high-speed continuous shooting.

Shortened Min Focus Distance & Increased Max Reproduction Ratio

The minimum focus distance is shortened from the 1.4 m of the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II to 1.1 m. Also, the maximum reproduction ratio is increased from the current 0.11x to 0.21x for evolved performance. As a result, you can get much closer to subjects for focusing, enabling photographic expression similar to close-up shooting.

Smooth Operability with the Carefully Assessed Lens Design 

The zoom ring, that is more often used than the focus ring, has been moved to the front side, ensuring well-balanced, comfortable holding during shooting. A difference in level provided on the knurled rubber covering the zoom ring also contributes to stable holding and zooming. Four focus function buttons, newly employed for this lens, are positioned at the top, bottom, left and right at 90° intervals, making it possible to press any of them in diverse lens holding situations regardless of the camera orientation. Also, using the “Lens focus function buttons” menu of the D5, D4S, D810, D810A and D500, the functions activated with a press of the focus function buttons of the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR can be changed, providing quick response to variable shooting situations. The highly durable tripod collar ring incorporating bearings enables quick and smooth switching between horizontal and vertical orientation. For comfortable handheld shooting, the tripod collar can be detached to reduce weight.
