Commemorating Nikon's 100th Anniversary

When it comes to unrivalled optical excellence and versatility, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR knows no bounds. Its lightweight design stems from advanced NIKKOR optics housed in magnesium-alloy, allowing for agile shooting in diverse situations from sports, wildlife, fashion, portraits to everyday subjects. Geared for creative control, it boasts a groundbreaking Vibration Reduction (VR) system providing an effect equivalent to a shutter speedSHUTTER SPEEDAperture, shutter speed and ISO form what is known as the exposure triangle in photography. Shutter speed is the length of time that a single frame is exposed for, more specifically how fast the shutter opens and closes to permit light entering the lens, to reach the sensor. A slow shutter speed means a longer exposure time useful for motion blur like the silky look of flowing water, whereas a fast shutter speed means a shorter exposure time useful for freezing the appearance of motion in images like a hummingbird in flight. It is measured in seconds starting at 1 second and halving our doubling in time. For example: 1/2s, 1/4s and 1/8s are all fractions of a second with 1/2s being the longest exposure time, 1/4s half of that and 1/8s another half etc. 4 stops faster in Normal Mode. With a maximum apertureAPERTUREAperture, shutter speed and ISO form what is known as the exposure triangle in photography. Aperture refers to an opening inside the lens, similar to the iris of your eye, that changes in diameter to control the amount of light that enters a camera. Aperture is expressed in f-stops: the lower the number, the larger the aperture, e.g. f/1.4 is larger than f/8. A larger (or wider) aperture allows more light to pass through the lens to the sensor (film) as a picture is taken, particularly useful in low-light conditions. A larger aperture also produces a shallower depth-of-field, and thus more background blur. of f/2.8 throughout its entire focal range, improved autofocus (AF) and enhanced tracking performance, this extraordinary fast telephotoTELEPHOTOA lens with long focal length capable of making distant objects appear nearer thus larger. Essentially, it isolates and magnifies the subject so that it appears as a full image when shooting from a distance. Telephoto lenses are ideal for photographing subjects that are further away, such as wildlife and sports photography. zoom lensZOOM LENSAllows a camera to, unlike a fixed-focal length or prime lens, change smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa by varying the focal length. A true zoom lens, also called a parfocal lens, is one that maintains focus when its focal length changes. Due to more moving parts, zoom lenses often produce images of slightly lesser quality than their prime lens counterparts. However due to the inherent flexibility of being able to vary the focal length, they are extremely popular for photography where composition needs to be adapted quickly - such as at weddings, for example. is the definitive choice for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Breathtaking Images that Truly Stand Out

Capture phenomenal stills and videos in stunning high-resolution with this lens. A single fluorite lens element renders excellent imagery with superb chromatic aberration correction performance, while a High-Refractive Index (HRI) lens element effectively corrects curvature of field and spherical aberration for exceptional clarity. Six Extra-low Dispersion glass elements ensure outstanding contrastCONTRASTThe difference between areas of different brightness levels in a photograph: A high-contrast image has a greater difference between light and dark areas, whereas a low-contrast image has a narrow range of tones. Contrast is used to direct a viewer’s attention to a photographer’s subject either with colour contrast (bold versus duller colours) or tonal contrast (bright versus darker tones). and colour rendering. The Nano Crystal Coat also works to minimise ghosting and flareFLAREOccurs when a point light source such as the sun or an artificial light (that is brighter than the rest of the scene), hits the front element of a lens resulting in a lack of contrast, haze, or unwanted semi-transparent objects being present in the image. You can avoid lens flare with a lenshood or filters, however, the effect is also useful for bringing artistic elements into an image, such as sun rays peaking out from behind a rock formation. effects for unsurpassed image quality.

Engineered for Stability

Designed for movement, the VR system of this lens delivers an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4 stops faster in Normal Mode for steadier shots during handheld shooting. Its VR Sport Mode also provides a stable viewfinder image even when tracking randomly moving subjects during high-speed continuous shooting, which is especially effective when shooting sporting events.

For Every Frame that Matters

An improved AF tracking performance, along with the incorporation of an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism, enables you to achieve effective subject tracking and greater auto exposureEXPOSUREExposure is controlled by three elements: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Achieving the correct exposure is similar to collecting rain in a bucket, up to an optimum level. The rate of rainfall is out of your control (light), yet you can control these three factors: the bucket’s width (lens aperture), the duration you leave it in the rain (shutter speed), and how effective your bucket is in collecting rain (ISO). These three elements work together to control the amount of light per unit area, preventing underexposure (too dark) or overexposure (too bright), giving you a natural looking image. control with ease, even during high-speed continuous shooting.

Majestic at Any Distance

With a minimum focusing distance of 1.1 m, this remarkable lens brings you nearer to your subjects with absolute focus and precision. However, this lens isn’t just about getting closer. With a focal lengthFOCAL LENGTHMeasured in mm, it is the distance from the focal point of a lens (its centre or curved mirror where light converges) to the plane of the image sensor (film) when an object is in focus. A shorter focal length lens sees a wider image and a longer focal length brings your subject closer. For example, a 15mm lens sees a very wide image and is perfect for landscape photography. Conversely, a 500mm lens sees a very narrow image, brings the subject much closer and is thus great for subjects that are far away, like a bird in a tree. With zoom lenses, its minimum and maximum focal lengths are indicated, for example, as 24-105mm. A zoom lens allows you to change the lens’ focal length, with shorter (wide-angle) and longer (telephoto) options, whereas a fixed focal length lens requires you to move back and forth to find the correct image composition. of up to 200mm and maximum reproduction ratio of 0.21x, capturing magnificent close-up shots of the smallest of subjects comes easy – even from afar.

Reliability on the Go

The lens weighs approximately 110 g lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II thanks to magnesium-alloy parts and the incorporation of one fluorite and one HRI lens elements. Sealed movable parts provide anti-dust and water-drop resistant capabilities, while fluorite coating effectively repels dust, water droplets, greases or dirt, ensuring easy maintenance and reinforced durability wherever your adventures may take you.

Highly Agile Shooting in Diverse Situations

The lens is FX-format compatible, telephoto zoom lens with a fixed maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, realizes a lightweight body for a large-aperture lens featuring professional specifications. The employment of one fluorite and one HRI lens elements as well as magnesium-alloy parts makes the lens lighter than the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II by approximately 110 g.

Weather-Resistant Performance for Shooting in Severe Environments

The lens structure provides weather-resistant performance with anti-dust and water-resistant capabilities. Movable parts and other sections are sealed to protect the inside of the lens against dust and water droplets. In addition, Nikon’s original fluorine coat applied to the extreme front surface, providing high antifouling performance and peel-resistant properties, contributes to more reliable shooting with easier maintenance. Fluorine coat also helps capturing clearer images due to its high antireflective effect.

Enhanced Optical Performance

The lens provides high-resolution images across the entire frame almost throughout the zoom range. The fluorite lens element featuring a high transmission rate and effective anomalous dispersion properties achieves outstanding chromatic aberration correction performance within the visible light spectrum, resulting in excellent image rendering. Six ED glass elements also reduce chromatic aberration that causes color fringing for stunning sharpness and contrast, while a High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element offering superb aberration-correction effects with a single element corrects curvature of field and spherical aberration simultaneously.

Furthermore, Nano Crystal Coat, an antireflective coating that employs an extra-low refractive index coating featuring ultra-fine, nano-sized crystal particles, effectively minimises ghost and flare effects even for difficult scenes such as when light enters the lens diagonally, producing clearer images. In addition to the high optical performance achieved through these factors, this lens enables exquisite image expression emphasising the main subject by utilizing a shallow depth-of-field and the large background blur that can be attained with a fast zoom lens featuring f/2.8 for up to 200 mm.

Improved Vibration Reduction that Incorporates Sport Mode

SPORT mode, employed as an option of the VR function, is especially effective when shooting sports in which subjects are radically moving. A stable viewfinder image can be provided even when tracking randomly moving subjects during high-speed continuous shooting handheld. When SPORT mode is activated, continuous shooting frame rate and release time lag are not affected. Compared to the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, VR performance immediately after the power-on has been greatly improved with the VR function activated by half-pressing of the shutter-release button right after the power is turned on, instantly enabling a stable viewfinder image and fine resulting images with maximized blur-reduction effect. Also, in NORMAL mode, the VR system provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4 stops* faster.

* Based on CIPA Standard; this value is achieved when attached to digital SLR cameras equipped with a full-size image sensor, with zoom set at the maximum telephoto position.

Improved Autofocus & Tracking Performance

Thanks to a new algorithm, the barrel vibration transmitted to the hands and sound caused when the AF drive starts/stops are remarkably reduced and suppressed. Also, AF tracking performance for continuous shooting of subjects with unpredictable movement, such as those slightly moving, moving at random speeds or approaching the camera at high speed, is improved. In addition, for enhanced AE control, an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism is adopted to attain more precise auto-exposure control even during high-speed continuous shooting.

Shortened Min Focus Distance & Increased Max Reproduction Ratio

The minimum focus distance is shortened from the 1.4 m of the current AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II to 1.1 m. Also, the maximum reproduction ratio is increased from the current 0.11x to 0.21x for evolved performance. As a result, you can get much closer to subjects for focusing, enabling photographic expression similar to close-up shooting.

Smooth Operability with the Carefully Assessed Lens Design

The zoom ring, that is more often used than the focus ring, has been moved to the front side, ensuring well-balanced, comfortable holding during shooting. A difference in level provided on the knurled rubber covering the zoom ring also contributes to stable holding and zooming. Four focus function buttons, newly employed for this lens, are positioned at the top, bottom, left and right at 90° intervals, making it possible to press any of them in diverse lens holding situations regardless of the camera orientation. Also, using the “Lens focus function buttons” menu of the D5, D4S, D810, D810A and D500, the functions activated with a press of the focus function buttons of the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR can be changed, providing quick response to variable shooting situations. The highly durable tripod collar ring incorporating bearings enables quick and smooth switching between horizontal and vertical orientation. For comfortable handheld shooting, the tripod collar can be detached to reduce weight.
