Allthough flash on-camera can be very good in some shooting situations, but for better looking images it is best to remove the flash from on-camera and choose a different angle. This gives you much more control over where shadows and highlights fall and can drastically alter the look of the image. The Canon OC-E3 unit allows you to do this by moving the flash away from the top of the camera while still retaining all of the flash controls as if the flash was still mounted in the hotshoe.
