Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens
The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II USM is a flexible zoom lens well-suited for a variety of subjects, ranging from portraiture to wildlife.
The lens utilises NANO USM technology that combines a fast, stills-optimised ring-type Ultrasonic Motor and a smooth, silent video-optimised Stepping Motor for all-around focusing performance to benefit multimedia image-makers. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers notably quicker performance throughout the zoom range for more responsive shooting from near to far. An Image Stabiliser system also compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working with slower shutter speeds.
For easy recognition, the lens also has an Information Display, which clearly showcases focus distance, focal length and stabiliser settings on a top-facing screen. Benefitting optical performance, the lens' construction utilises one Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) element to control chromatic aberrations and colour fringing for improved clarity, and, additionally, a nine-blade diaphragm is used to produce a pleasing bokeh quality for shallow depth of field imagery.

The EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM's NANO USM technology delivers quick, near-silent autofocus whether you're capturing an athlete jumping for a ball or recording wildlife in their natural habitat. For still images, it provides high-speed autofocus to help ensure you get the shot you want. When recording videos, the near-silent operation keeps unwanted noise out of your videos. For additional artistic control, manual focus is also possible even when the lens is set for autofocus. This means that when recording a video, for example, you can slowly pull in or out of focus for a dramatic effect.
New lens information display shows focusing distance, focal length and shake amount
The EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM features a new integral Lens Information Display for fast access to a wide variety of lens information. This lets you see the information you need at a glance, and then get right back to taking photos. The focusing distance display mode provides the distance the lens is focusing and an estimate of the depth-of-field, while the focal length display mode shows the 35mm-equivalent focal length. In shake amount display mode, the Lens Information Display gives an estimate of how much the lens and the camera are moving. To aid viewing in different lighting conditions, both black text on a light background or light text on a black background are selectable.
UD Lens element helps reduce chromatic aberration
With an all-new design, the EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM features 12 groups with 17 total elements, including an optimally positioned UD lens. UD, or Ultra Low Dispersion, helps correct chromatic aberrations (colored halos around objects) while reducing color blurring and keeping overall detail high. This helps the EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM produce sharp, high-contrast, richly colorful images throughout its zoom range.
Capture sharp images by avoiding camera shake with a 4-stop Image Stabilizer
For consistently sharp results, the EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM features an improved Image Stabilizer system that provides significantly enhanced shake reduction for up to 4 stops of shutter speeds. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations or at lower ISOs. Because of its enhanced stabilization, the EF 70–300mm f/4–5.6 IS II USM can also help minimize the need for a tripod.

My new favorite lens

This lens has exceeded my expectations. It compares well against my much bigger and heavier L series zooms. I really like the rendered look of images. Great for portraits and still life images. Sharp and nice contrast in all lighting conditions. The image stabilizer is incredibly good. Handheld at 1/30s at 300mm is possible. The autofocus is instant and spot. Only negative is no lens hood which is important with this lens. Highly recommended.
Affordable and reliable

This is a brilliant lens! I bought it as an addition to my camera when I bought it new. I use it for wildlife, and bird photography primarily and with its fast autofocusing and image stabilization, you have a certainty that your images with come out super crisp. I would definitely recommend it.
An amazing piece of glass

I have the 100-400Lii and recently acquired this lens for a family member, but not before testing it out. My opinion is that it is a very very good lens, with quality and autofocus speeds almost matching the 100-400. This is definitely a must-have lens.
Consider this before going L

This is an absolutely stunning lens. The focus is instantaneous and spot on. Build quality is superb, as is image quality. The only reason I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars is for the lack of an included lens hood. The Canon version is way too expensive. I had to import a generic one from the US. Come on Canon! Really!
That said, before going to the 70-300 L, take a long and hard look at this one. It is that good. The only sensible zoom upgrade I can see from here is the 100-400.

A Great Lens That's Underrated.

Bang for your buck, with a silent, quick autofocus. The EF 70-300 IS II fits on all my Canon DSLR & SLR's without a fuss.
I've been using this lens for 6-months now, mostly on my little 200D, which I have recently travelled with from Cape Town to Swaziland, Chilean Patagonia to the Jungles of Brazil.
One thing that's really struck me by surprise is how much I enjoy using this lens shooting video. The 4-stop image stabilizer is fantastic and just so much better than the majority of my other Canon lenses with crisp lively and clear images I always enjoy - and so I am well impressed!
I also like the lock button on the side of the lens as other lenses I've used slide open while shooting adventure/travel photography with my camera hanging from my holster or belt. Underrated lens for sure. And great option if the L-lenses are out of your reach, or if you want a quality lens for when you upgrade to full-frame but want to use on your cropped sensor camera in the meantime.
A must have, lightweight wildlife lens

This lens is a quite a useful zoom lens, although I find I only get the quality I need at F8. The nano USM makes focusing quite a fun exercise as the motor can jump from infinity to right in front of you faster than you could imagine! It’s a lens I always carry as it’s an easy to carry zoom lens in case you come across a bird, or even a little bug in a tree
