Capture Every Detail with 20.2mp APS-C CMOS Sensor and Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors
Designed with an APS-C sized sensor with a 20.2 megapixel resolution, the 7D mkII delivers incredibly sharp images with very high detail. The high resolution means that images can be cropped to achieve a desired composition or blown up and printed at sizes as large as A0. Dual Digic 6 Image processors along with CMOS sensor technology ensure very low digital noise levels at high sensor sensitivity settings. The ISO can be selected from a range between 100 - 16 000 and is extendable to a high 51 200. This makes it very well suitable for difficult lighting conditions like events or weddings, where lighting is usually very limited.
With the processing power employed by the Dual Digic 6 Image Processors, a continuous shooting speed of up to 10 frames per second for over 1000 JPEGs or 31 RAW images is made possible. It also improves image quality by very effectively reducing digital noise and renders smooth tonal and colour gradation and corrects any optical aberrations that may have been introduced by the lens. This high-speed performance means that you could shoot very high action and have a large range of beautiful images to select that perfect frame from.
The sensor in combination with a powerful processing engine produces seamless Full HD 1080p video with remarkable sensitivity and minimal noise. Shooting high quality video on a DLSR body is desirable and becoming very popular due to the small form factor of these cameras. Being able to produce near-broadcast quality footage on a camera as small and light as the 7D mkII is an obvious benefit.
Tracking Action is a Breeze with 65-Point All Cross-Type AF System
A 65-Point all cross-type autofocus system is employed when shooting through the viewfinder. This dense focus point array ensures wide frame coverage and fast accurate subject tracking. The centre focus point is a dual cross-type sensor and is capable of focussing down to light levels as low as -3EV. This facilitates quick and accurate focus in very dark conditions and in combination with a fast aperture lens – like an f/2.8 or f/1.4 lens – the 7D will make sure you practically never miss the moment.
Three focus modes are selectable and include One Shot, AI Focus and AI Servo modes. The One Shot mode uses user-selected focus points and will lock once focus is acquired. It is perfect for stationary subjects. The AI focus modes make use of Artificial Intelligence to choose appropriate focus points for the scenario and can dynamically adapt to changing scenery or moving subjects. The AI Servo mode intelligently tracks a moving subject and always keeps it in focus. This is perfect for shooting sport or wildlife action. And with a high density of focus points the 7D will ensure pin-sharp focus no matter where in the frame your subject is. For ultimate control there are 7 manual focus point selection options and configurations.
Always be in Focus with New Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology
Dual Pixel Architecture is a patented technology developed by Canon with the idea in mind to significantly improve auto focus speed, responsiveness and accuracy during video and live view shooting. It employs a method similar to how camcorders acquire focus. Each pixel consists of two separate photodiodes. This technology integrates a broad and dense network of phase-detection into the image sensor and enables the Canon 7D mkII to quickly and accurately focus during video and live view shooting, without any hunting for focus. The system is ideally suited for filming moving subjects and will track the focus in real-time. It gives a camcorder autofocus feel to a DSLR camera – a first in its class. So now you can enjoy shooting high-quality full HD video on a DSLR with a range of great Canon lenses and enjoy the benefit of full-time autofocus that is quick and responsive.
Produce Amazing Videos with Full HD Video Functions
High quality video productions using DSLR cameras are becoming increasingly popular due to the size and flexibility of the system. The Canon 7D mark 2 beautifully answers to this trend by offering Full HD 1080p video recording capability at a variety of frame rates up to a maximum of 60 frames per second. Video is usually played back at 30 frames per second and being able to shoot at a higher frame rate allows you to create slow-motion footage. Files are stored in either MP4 or MOV formats, both extremely popular and compatible with nearly all editing suites on the market and you will be able to seamlessly continue into the editing process without compatibility issues. The high quality H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec is used for in-camera compression, and uncompressed footage can be recorded via an HDMI connection to an external recorder.
Both IPB and All-i frame compression methods are available as options in the setup menu and can be selected according to editing requirements and workflow. The IPB compression method uses a key-frame every half second and only retains the relative changes in the following frames. This renders smaller files but makes tight frame-by-frame editing difficult. The All-i compression method retains each frame and compresses them individually thus rendering files about 3 times larger than IPB – because more information is kept – however tight editing is now much easier since each frame is retained.
A customizable Movie Servo Auto Focus mode is available and can be used to adjust the focus point, speed and tracking characteristics to ensure a smooth AF quality during shooting. If you are recording audio in-camera, the use of a Canon STM lens will benefit the audio quality with near silent auto focus operation.
In-camera audio is recorded using the Linear PCM format for MOV files, or the AAC format for MP4 files. The 7D features a microphone input if external microphone use is desired. The camera also features a headphone output for real-time audio monitoring.
Take It Outside with Durable Body Design and Weather Sealing
The 7D mark 2 is considered a semi-professional camera and is designed and built to withstand heavy use and harsh conditions. It features a highly durable magnesium alloy body and a shutter mechanism that has been tested to 200 000 cycles. The camera’s mirror and drive mechanisms have been optimized for heavy-duty use. As part of this durable design, the 7D features high grade dust and moisture sealing allowing you to take it outside and get great shots regardless of the conditions. A large and bright 3 inch LCD display makes menu navigation and image review a pleasure. It has been treated with an anti-smudge and anti-glare coating ensuring more comfortable viewing in bright ambient lighting conditions. The optical viewfinder offers 100% frame coverage which is a significant help when composing images and allows you to frame you shot more carefully and precisely. An overlay display shows important shooting and setting information right in the viewfinder so you can be fully aware of camera settings and exposure information without the need of taking your view off the scene. This allows quick adjustments to be made and monitored while capturing fast paced action without missing the moment. The 7D mkII features a dual memory card slot and is capable of taking one Compact Flash and one SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. In conjunction with this feature, the camera can be setup to overflow data to the secondary card, which is great during fast shooting because it ensures you will not run out of storage space in the middle of the moment. It can also be setup to do in-camera backup to the secondary file. Choose this setting when shooting an extremely important project. If the primary card somehow fails or becomes corrupt, you will have a backup. The camera also features a range of customizable buttons and shortcut controls allowing you configure a setup that perfectly suits your shooting style or environment.
Get Spot-on Exposure and Focus Tracking with Intelligent Scene Detection and Tracking Systems
An iSA (Intelligent Scene Analysis) system makes use of an independent 150,000-pixel RGB sensor for precise exposure metering in even the trickiest lighting conditions. The iTR AF (Intelligent Tracking Recognition) system incorporates dedicated tracking algorithms and a 65-point focus array to ensure fast and accurate focus tracking of moving subjects. By making use of information shared by the iSA, focus tracking can be done very efficiently and intelligently. This means that you can concentrate on framing the subject correctly and setup a great composition, while the 7D will take care of getting the exposure and focus spot-on.
Capture Important Location Data with an Integrated GPS Receiver
An integrated GPS Receiver automatically records longitude, latitude, elevation and UTC Time values as EXIF data in every image file. This is very useful when travelling since you’d be able to accurately plot every image on a map as a reference of your travels. It is also an essential feature for use in surveys and research since location data is critical for such work. The Integrated GPS also offers a digital compass which can be handy in the field.
Flickering Light Sources are Troubles of the Past
The Canon 7D mkII features a very handy flicker detection system that displays a warning in the viewfinder when a flickering light source has been detected. Flickering light sources – like certain florescent and neon lights – create light and dark bands and inconsistent colour in digital images and video as it interferes with the operation of the CMOS sensor. This can be compensated for by using the Anti-flicker shooting mode, found in the camera menu, which fixes this problem by synchronizing the imaging with the flicker.
Save Some Time on Editing with In-camera Image Correction
Lenses inherently produce chromatic aberrations and distortions which you would need to fix when editing your images. The 7D has in-camera correction capability of these optical problems. This means that your images will be virtually aberration and distortion free straight out of the camera, which will save you a lot of time in post production.
