How she got into Photography

She grew up in the little seaside village of Muizenberg, Cape Town, before she left for the big city lights of New York at the age of 17. That is when she first got exposed to the world of photography she now so adores; working with top photographers like Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Herb Ritts. She graced the covers of a whopping 17 Vogue magazines before she decided to leave the world of modeling to get behind the lens herself. This is, after all where she feels most comfortable and at home.

A few Pieces of Equipment

Her photographic equipment of choice is the Canon 5D Mk III and all the popular L-series lenses. Since most of her shoots are on location she enjoys using the California Bounce Reflector and when necessary, a skrim to diffuse harsh light.

Moments from the Past and Dreams for the Future

To date, her proudest moment was shooting the Hansgrohe Calendar. She describes the trip as nothing less than amazing. “Going up and down Namibia, creating great photographs with a wonderful team and fabulous locations.” Alexa’s dream would be to shoot in Cuba and Kenya, “Cause it’s amazing!” and I couldn’t agree more. Between the colourful cities and pristine, turquoise waters of Cuba and the earthy tones the landscapes of Kenya has to offer, what could be better?

It’s not Male or Female: It’s Photographer

She doesn’t feel as if though photography is predominantly a male dominated industry and believes that there is no difference between her and her male counterparts. It’s simply likeminded people with the same love of creating mesmerizing imagery.

What makes me woman? Compassion.

Alexa Singer says that what makes her a woman is compassion. With a heart for nature from which she gets a lot of inspiration, her advice for photographers is to “Just go out there and shoot from the heart. Be nice along that way and stay true to yourself.”
