South Africa, a land of raw beauty and diverse ecosystems, is home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife. From savannahs to forests and deserts, the country’s natural beauty is unmatched. However, it’s not just the landscapes that leave an impression; it’s the incredible wildlife that roams these regions, captivating both locals and visitors alike.

Some photographers dedicate their lives to capturing the essence of wildlife, capturing their bond with nature through photography. In this special spotlight, we focus on two extraordinary South African wildlife photographers, Peter Forsyth and Ruan Minnaar.

Meet Peter Forsyth

Peter’s journey began in the vibrant city of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Growing up in a family with a love for nature, his passion for nature took root early on. After pursuing a career as a student field guide in the renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Peter eventually found his true calling as a wildlife photographer. His passion lies not just in capturing stunning images but also in fostering a deeper connection between people and the wild world. He has dedicated countless hours to observing and photographing South Africa’s wildlife, driven by a mission to share its beauty with the world.

What inspired you to pursue wildlife photography?

“It’s always been about the thrill of getting closer to nature,” Peter says. He recalls a childhood filled with outdoor adventures, which naturally led to an enduring passion for wildlife. “It’s a unique experience where you can connect with animals in their natural element. Every shoot is a different story waiting to be told.”

What is your most unforgettable wildlife encounter?

Peter reminisces about a moment that seemed almost too perfect to be true; a female leopard revealing her two cubs during the golden light of a winter’s afternoon. “I was sitting only five meters from her, and as if on cue, the cubs came out of hiding and moved toward the vehicle. It was pure magic.”

What are the biggest challenges in wildlife photography?

“The unpredictability of animals is a major challenge,” Peter explains. “They’re on their own schedule, and it’s not always easy to get that perfect shot.”

What camera gear do you swear by for wildlife photography?

Peter relies on Canon’s R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens. “The R5’s high megapixels and the versatility of the 100-500mm lens make it the perfect setup for capturing both intimate portraits and wide shots of animals in the wild.”

How do you approach ethical wildlife photography?

“You must respect their space and avoid actions that could alter their natural behaviours,” Peter states.
