Do you conduct any research before shooting?
It’s not exactly research. My approach to the shooting process is a bit different. I need to understand the taste and preferences of the person I will be working with, and it should align with my own taste and vision. To save time, I ask for a few examples of what the model likes, and after that, I also provide some examples. This helps me understand both our tastes and preferences. It also gives me an idea of the style and location for the photoshoot.
Where do you find inspiration for a specific shoot?
Like everyone else – I find inspiration everywhere, but I tend to draw a lot from the person I will be working with. You could say that I am inspired by them and try to understand them as much as possible – this is the process of inspiration for the photoshoot. I capture the person, not just an image, which is why I must fully understand them.
Do you choose the outfits, or do your models bring their own?
I have full control over the wardrobe selection process. I ask the model to choose clothing that fits the concept and style of the shoot, as well as the locations, as the clothing should harmonise with the surroundings in terms of style and colour. We base styling on the planned concept. After I receive photos of the clothing from the model, I make adjustments. This way, we know exactly what we are working with. Of course, if there are additional wardrobe options (accessories or extras), I can make changes on-site, but it still follows the planned concept.
How do you prepare and make the model comfortable during the photoshoot?
Preparing the model involves understanding the shoot’s context and ensuring mutual interest in the results. Establishing a comfortable environment is crucial; it begins with building trust and rapport through open communication. Once the shoot starts, I take on the role of director, guiding the model while allowing them the freedom to express themselves naturally, maintaining this comfort and trust ensures genuine and impactful photos centred around the individual rather than just the aesthetics.
What else do you do to prepare for a boudoir session?
First, I understand the model’s taste and preferences, suggest my own options, choose the location (location or studio interior), and make clothing adjustments for the looks. If my team is involved, I show examples for styling, hair, and makeup. Before the shoot, everyone already understands what we’re doing, and it’s essential that all the preparation processes are as smooth as possible in decision-making and communication. Of course, during the shoot, there is room for improvisation. A photoshoot is a creative process, and at any moment, you feel that something needs to be done differently, I listen to my instincts and do it. This is why I achieve what you see. Photography is an art, and it should not be mechanical.
As photographers, it’s essential to diversify our offerings and embrace new opportunities. Including boudoir photography in your wedding package not only expands your portfolio but also allows you to explore new creative avenues and connect with clients on a more intimate level. Serhii Kovbasyuk serves as an inspiring example in this regard, demonstrating how boudoir photography can empower individuals and capture the essence of their inner beauty. Through his work, Serhii inspires people to step outside their comfort zones, celebrate their uniqueness, and embrace the artistry of self-expression through photography.
