Jasmin Chew is a 23 year old lifestyle photographer from Toronto, Canada. We first took note of her work scouring Pexels for stock imagery and just had to learn a bit more about the talented photographer behind the photos.
Who is Jasmin Chew?
Her work can be described as delicate, feminine, whimsical… transporting you to magical, dreamy destinations. She’s been doing photography since the age of 12 and turned it into a full-time job in 2018 and has since worked with large companies like Spotify, Knix and Mejuri. Her speciality is self-portraits in nature, which all began when she was bullied because of her appearance – she wanted a way to fall in love with herself. She’d set up her phone on video mode and then screenshot poses she liked before editing them on an app.
Finding photography locations.
Locations are always a bit of a challenge. “I’m not a city girl whatsoever, always looking to find locations with flowers, large fields, lush forests and long roads.” To find such places, she drives around and explores small hidden roads, or she’d go onto Google Maps and take a virtual tour. If she sees anything she likes, she’d dream up ideas to shoot in that specific location.
List of photographic equipment:
- Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera
- Fujifilm X100V Compact Digital Camera
- Canon 5D MK II DSLR Camera
- Canon EOS 4000D DSLR Camera
- Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM – ART Series Lens for Canon
- Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens
- Canon EF 70-300mm f/4 USM Lens
- Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM MK II Lens
- Brevitē camera bag
With regards to editing, she uses Lightroom on her iMac or iPad, and sometimes uses Photoshop when she needs to get rid of imperfections, for example cleaning up her canvas.
We asked her more about shooting and sharing her photos on Pexels… Her answer is as graceful as her work. She explains that with a platform like Pexels, anyone in the world can use your photograph for anything, from magazine covers to albums and illustrations and you get nothing in return. But now and then you get a kind soul that lets you know how they appreciate your art, that your image inspired them to start painting for example, this makes everything worth it for her.
Fast forward five years and she hopes to be proud of where she finds herself. “I hope I’m content with where I am and that I’m able to continue in photography as my full-time job.” She dreams to open up her own studio, renting out space for fellow creatives, giving them a safe space to create. “I can decorate it how I want, have loads of natural light and call this space my own.”
