Outdoorphoto in collaboration with Sony and Godox recently hosted an interactive car photography workshop for our annual Opdieknoppie birthday specials. We gave guests the opportunity to experiment with different camera gear and lights on a selection of sports cars. We take a look at how one particular photographer took the opportunity to create some seriously cool photos.
Photographer Conrad Cadle first started dabbling with photography in 2014 and became a serious hobbiest in 2019. He fully embraces his creative side, exploring different genres and styles of photography.
This was the first time he photographed cars, so it came with its fair share of challenges and after some trial and error, the photos came out exceptionally well.
There were four shooting stations consisting of different cars and a superbike lit up with constant light supplied by Godox. The most challenging aspects of the shoot was that there were about 10 photographers fighting for a spot to take the best shot and lighting was also a bit of a challenge, since everyone was triggering flashes all over the place.
With regards to how he’d approach a shoot like this again, he’ll make a few changes here and there. Since most of the lighting setups were constant instead of strobe, it was a bit difficult to get crisp, detailed images out of hand, so a tripod will be beneficial. He’d also pack a zoom lens. You have more freedom and can play around with different angles and create different perspectives without having to change lenses.
His favourite part of the evening was mingling with like minded, passionate photographers of all walks of life; each with their own stories, strengths and weaknesses. The excitement was tangible and everyone was sharing photography stories enjoying pizza and beer.
For this shoot he used a Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera in combination with two lenses. He used the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 for the bike shots and the RF 85mm f/1.2 for the cars.
