Nice one GB!
A question - if I`d been there Id`ve used f3.5 to get a bit more depth of field, as rugby action tends to be in a wider plane than most sports. I notice you shoot wide open pretty much all the time. Any reason other than to smooth out busy backgrounds? (Which is reason enough, I know.)

Thanks for commenting Jaytee. I am so used to shoot at 2.8, I never consider any other option. Firstly, as you mentioned, to blur out noisy bg's, and secondly to get as much light in when shooting under lights, so as to keep my iso as low as possible.

Awesome action shot, GB!
The only nit I have is the bright patch at the player's foot on the right, which I find a bit distracting. I'd consider cloning that out?
Agree with Jaytee also on the depth of field. I saw from EXIF you shot on ISO 100, so I think you could've shot at ISO 200 or 400 and stopped down a bit to f5.6 or so maybe, just to get the face of the player a bit further back sharp also. Just a thought..

Hi Ernst, thanks for your kind comments. I agree with you on the %%$#!! chair that looks awkward. I was just too lazy to clone that out as well. I did some other cloning out as well. Just as an interesting afterthought.... I spoke to Christiaan Kotze, head sports photographer for Media 24 about cloning out stuff in a sports pic. According to him, that is a fireable offense in the newspaper world! Regarding the F-stop.... I agree to some extent, yet disagree in another. All the pros shoot at the lowest number F stop their lens allows them? If you shoot at a school sports match where there are %^#$! white double cab Hilux bakkies parked around the field, you will definately try and blur out the lot as much as possible.

Powerful shot GB, awesome light at focus point, I also shoot sport at lowest F stop for soft backgrounds. On this photo it highlights the focus on the ballcarrier and softens it out to defenders and support players, I also don't believe in cloning in sport photography!
