Laura, to me, - this is wonderful! The photograph is dramatic, facial expression great, and in my opinion the lighting adds to the drama of the shot and anything else might have spoilt it?

Hi Laura
I really like it; very expressive, nice and sharp and the lighting well handled.
I agree with you about the use of a spotlight rather than flash at night; I feel it creates a far more dramatic image and is more flattering for the subject. I also like the composition with the gory bits of the carcass as well as the branch still in frame but not distracting.
All that I would consider trying is removing those the branches in the bg.
