Matt you seized a once in a lifetime opportunity here and got a usable shot. Black-fronted Bush-shrikes are uncommon residents in the forests of Magoebaskloof and the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe but absent from of our lower lying forests. They are seldomly seen due to their preferred tree-top habitat and therefore perceived as being rare. Once you know their call you'll know they are present but this is still no guarantee of a good sighting! You had one of the best! My guess is the bird only briefly hopped onto that perch giving you a very brief opportunity! Unfortunately the ambient light levels only allowed a 1/60 sec shutterspeed - this created a slight camerashake and the bird might also already have been moving off leading to a slightly soft image. I am also assuming you were handholding the camera? No one can plan this sort of shot with a tripod not knowing where the bird is going to land, unless you had a hide up very high in a tree close to an active nest? Your only options would have been a higher ISO setting or using flash... Still one of the best BF Bush-shrike images around, very well done!!!

Thanks for the amazing comment Johann, yes it was hand-held, so the image isnt pin-sharp. I have the new Sigma 120-300 OS which weighs 3kg, so not easy to shoot hand-held especially in low light conditions! The bird was seen on the Woodbush drive, and we were extremely lucky with this because we had sighted one earlier and failed to get any good shots, but luckily we came across this very obliging individual about 50m on... Now I need to photograph the Orange Ground-Thrush
