Chris, these colours are out-of-this world! Very VERY nice!

I have a question: Would f5.6 have worked here? Am I right if I say that you probably stuck to f8 since that would've been better with open wings? I guess my question REALLY is, do you usually work with f8 in such conditions of small flying birds?

Thanks for the comments guys. Isak, I always try the maximum depth of field that the situation allows me as it helps to get critical sharpness with fast moving subjects. f/5.6 would have worked as well, but I would have gotten more heads and eyes out of focus, as my depth of field would have been reduced. Hope this makes sense..

Stunning shot especially at 700mm. Chris what tripod head did you use to track it or (dont know if I should even suggest this ) did you wait for the bird to come to the frame?

Excellent shot. I like the question/reply re Isak, which does make sense.
But I would have gone for f/5.6 for more background blur (maybe that's why I have so many heads out of focus ). I am finding that by using higher ISO and therefore higher shutter speeds, I am getting more keepers, but my lens is not IS. Were you using IS (mode 2) for this shot?

Thanks for the comments guys. I used my Manfrotto 501 fluid head and panned with the birds. No I was not on IS, it would not really have made a difference at these shutterspeeds.

You are really good at this Chris! DId you sharpen the bird in isolation of the background or add some blurring to the background after sharpening??

    1. The amazing detail of the bird afforded by this photo is sensational ....

The square and fork of the tail, the blue rump, the green crown, the black stripe across the eye and ear coverts, the black-tipped carmine feathers ... UNREAL !!!

You don't even get this amount of detail in the best illustrated field guides.

Hannelie I first sharpened the whole image and then I ran a noise filter on the background.
