Yeah, a bit more reach wouldn't have hurt here...
    Well spotted though.

OK, google earthed rietvlei. Its almost to Zeerust? I dont think this is where I should be? Found the correct directions. We will be there tomorrow,29th Dec, at 5 for 5:30. Anyone else coming through?

All Wildlife Photographers must have a valid seasonal visitors card.
    and then
From this Saturday Rietvlei will open from 05:00 not only to valid seasonal card holders, but also for day visitors. Payment at the gate.
Eric, will we still be allowed in without a permit, or was this only for the one day?

    Hi
Fish eagles is at the big dam where the boats are so you will not find them. IF you very lucky you might spot them from coots corner(sometimes).

Bushmaster it should not be a problem for you to go in at 5. I did last Sat without a season ticket. Season ticket is R285

Was at Rietvlei this morning at 6:00 with my wife. What a great outing. Have so much respect for people taking BIF photos. I tried and failed, but we had a good laugh. The wife is very eager to take BIF photos now. It's only when you go out and try to capture the images, that you realize why people get 100-400 and even bigger lenses. I saw a guy with 3 bodies with 3 white lenses - Eina ! Actually, I saw a lot of white lenses today and a Sigma "I think". It's a great inspiration for me to safe next year! Regards.

    Gates open at 05:30 now.
There are 3 hides and a lapa that must be booked in advance for functions etc. Access to the lapa is restricted.
IMO none of the hides are really good for BIF. The hide at the picnic site (off South Road) and Fern Hide (on Vlei Route) are best for visits in the morning. Coot Hide (on Main Road and closest to the gate) is probably the best for BIF - incoming Coots, Egyptian Geese and Ducks with the odd Pied Kingfisher if you are fortunate. Unfortuantely this hide faces east and it is best to visit it in the afternoon. A reasonable site for BIF (from your vehicle) is on Acacia Route near the reeds. You may also be able to get BIF at the picnic site but not from the hide (in my experience).
Have fun - Rietvlei is always worth a visit.

    Hi Guys,

I hangout at Rietvlei regularly as it's about 5 K's from my house. I have seen a lot of photographers driving around and thought it will be cool if all of the ODP members displayed the ODP sticker on their vehicles. This will enable us to ID each other.

    Cool or not?

Eish it feels good flying the black and white shark in bluebulls country. Did I say that out loud? I mean I have an ODP sticker and show it proudly!
