Studio Backdrop/Background material
I am considering setting up a studio at home, one of the things I am looking into at the moment is the backdrops/backgrounds.
Have worked with the paper backgrounds, but I find it is not that long lasting, what with people walking on it etc, and it crinkles etc.
As to material bg's, this is a option, but I hear crinkles are a problem.
Looking at the Studio Setup's sticky, MT's studio has a material that looks plasticky, does anybody have any ideas what material it is.

Re: Studio Backdrop/Background material
It's ABS sheeting from Maizey Plastics. They use 1mm thickness if I remember correctly.
(Only know this because I'm the plastics industry and was looking for alternative suppliers for them at one stage - not because I've got a similar set-up).

Re: Studio Backdrop/Background material
Thanks Johan, do you have any idea where in CT I can get it, and more or less what the cost is.
Another question, does it roll up????

Re: Studio Backdrop/Background material
Only a pleasure.
Maizey has branches countrywide, and the contact details can be found on http://www.maizey.co.za/content/branches.htm
Aren't I just the nicest person - Maizey Plastics are our opposition in certain commodities and here I go promoting them Our company don't do sheeting though, but use it in the manufacture of certain items (only Polyethylene and Polypropylene though, not ABS), so I've got no idea in the cost involved. I cannot see why it wouldn't be able to roll up, especially at 1mm thickness, but maybe just confirm it with their sales personel.

I am also using the stuff - very effective - no reflecting and you just tape them together with white duct tape. I went for the 3mm - little bit more expensive but I think its worth it. Cant remember the size per sheet but it was around R400 per sheet. Yes I also bought from Maizys (spelling ?)

Thanks, the duct tapes a good tip, I was wondering how I could join two sheets together cause 2.5x 1.2 just aint big enough.
I phoned them and the 1mm sheet was R140

Yes , just be carefull with the tipe (brand) ductape you use. You get different qualities and the "cellotape" brand is a no go. I used one (cant remember the name) sold by Midas.
Hope this helps.

Re: Studio Backdrop/Background material
The prices quoted per roll is for PVC film, not the PVC sheets which is thicker and in a specific pre-cut size
I bought 2m of the black PVC film the other day and I love the effect I got in my studio.
For my photo table (infinity curve) we use a 3mm sheet of white PVC

Re: Studio Backdrop/Background material
I bought white Trilobal a few months ago. It's a kind of stretchable material. You only get it in 1,5m wide. But buy it double length of what you need and sew it together.
Works brilliant! You just stretch it a bit to get a flat service.
I also bought black, haven't tested it yet. It will cost less then R20/m.
You also don't have to worry about unwanted wrinkles like you get with Muslin backdrops!
Want a piece of me?.....Then take your best shot!.....Print it out.....And cut it off!

I see the IN thing is wallpaper stuck on plywood so it can be changed often. Just a observation. Use it / lose it

Matt at ivokstudios in randburg sells vinyl rolls 3.2mx11m. Black one side and white the other side. R1000 ex vat and shipping. Works well. Kinda matt finish so don't reflect to much and you get 2 colours. Just thought I'd mention it.
