canon 350d / 580ex flash
Hi there
HELP ! I have been experiencing underexposure since I bought my equipment . I had the updated firmware 1.0.2 installed by canon , but this still hasnt solved the problem . I have tried many different settings as advised by people using the same equipment , who are getting good results , but I am still getting underexposure . I had the camera checked out by canon , but they cant find anything wrong with it . They say that perhaps the problem might be the flash , which they will check out tomorrow . What happens if they dont find a fault with the flash ? I am feeling quite desperate . Any thoughts ?

High Nazeem
Without posting more detail, ie full exif info and the image so we can see exactly which camera settings were used, what the image looked like ie background/subject ratio, etc it is extremely difficult to offer any suggestions. The equipment you listed should be fully compatible. Which area are you in, maybe someone from that area can give you 'hands-on' help. If you are close to Pretoria/Centurion, it would be no problem for me.

Agree with Simon. Without examples its difficult to make any call. Also what mode have you been shooting in.
I got the Canon flash bible from Simon a while back. Ask Simon for the link, have a read maybe you can find an answer for your problem.
Cheers

Re: canon 350d / 580ex flash
Thanks Simon . I will really appreciate your help . I live out in Newclare , very close to Rau / Johannesburg university . My telephone number is 084 580 7640 .
Can I please have your telephone number and address . As soon as I get my equipment back from Canon , I will get in touch with you . If there is anyone in Johannesburg that you think will be able to help me , can I please get the persons telephone number ? The guy from Canon was supposed to get back to me today , but I am still waiting . He said they were going to check the flash today . I have quite a few prints and images on my card that I can show you or whoever I am going to meet to discuss my problem with . This whole situation is depressing me , because I am now questioning the wisdom of me of having made the leap to digital photography . Do you think the firmware update didnt take effect ? Is this possible ?
Thanks again , and I look forward to meeting you guys .

Nazeem - I cannot think that a firmware update will fix your problem, to the best of my knowledge no such specific bug was identified by Canon.
My cel nr is 082 570 3014, if you would like to pop over to my place in Centurion when you have your equipment back, just give me a ring.
Your switch to digital should not have presented you with these problems, in fact the only problem you should have experienced is a smaller bank balance, all the rest stays the same.
Your underexposure can also be attributed to a lens with the aperture blades sticking on a smaller f-stop setting, also something to check out.

Hi Simon
I will visit you shortly with my equipment . In the meantime , what is your opinion of the Sigma 18-125 ? Is it better than the 18-55 kit lens in all respects ?

You're more than welcome. As to the lens, check my reply on thread

Yep, I am getting exactly the same behavior from my 580EX and rebel XT combination. Consistent ( at least this helps solving it ) about 2/3 stop underexposure. Easily corrected by setting a permanent +2/3 flash correction. Have no idea why.

getting the exact same problem ( because we don't know why ) . Consistent two third stop underexposure , corrected by a + two third permanent correction. Have the Rebel XT and 580 EX combination.
Many other Forums reported the same situation, with Rebel XT and 20D using 580EX, not corrected by firmware uptdate 1.0.2 on the XT.

Re: canon 350d / 580ex flash
Hi Sylvain
Have you been to Canon to check it out ? Nobody seems to have any answers to this problem . I thought that Canon would release another firmware update because , as you say , update 1.0.2. hasnt solved the problem . Nothing so far . If you would like to talk to me about it , you can contact me on 084 580 7640 , as I have spoken to numerous people about this problem , including Canon . Alternatively , you can give me your number and I will call you . There are others who have also complained about this same problem , and I would have thought that Canon would have done something about it by now . Perhaps a few of us having this problem should approach Canon collectively , and see if they can give us answers or a solution to this problem .
