In the old days you loaded a film and that was the ISO you were stuck with. Then came digital and ISO became more flexible. This is how I have worked for about the last 5 years. Somehow, I am not sure how, I sort of discovered auto ISO. It can under certain conditions be a very useful tool. Set an aperture and shutter speed that you want, set auto ISO and carry on. With modern cameras and up to date software it is amazing what you can get away with in the ISO department if you have to.

Very true Rob. It is like changing film on the fly. It became just another variable in trying to obtain the best aperture. However, I have decided to limit AutoISO on my camera to 400.

I have recently took photos late afternoon during a thunderstorm. late afternoon means >17H.
Decided to push ISO to 1600 in order to get some shutterspeed. Fetching the canvas prints today, it will reveal.

Default Pushing ISO on a 7D

I'm not sure how well TapaTalk will upload this but I tried via the website and it wouldnt let me upload an image so here goes...

This sort of noise I can live with. Of course I could run it through NR software like Dfine but that would defeat the purpose as far as this thread goes. Standard setting in-camera NR was applied to the jpg.

Looks clean and usable to me.
It would be nice to see the original photo with no editing and then to see edited with LR only.
