No better time than the present ... I guess.
I have two nephews, 8 and 10years of age.
It was the 8year old's birthday yesterday. His choice of birthday treat, a camera. He is now the proud owner of a Coolpix S30, in BlueBulls blue. My sister asked him whether he would like to join his school photography club, so next step.
Today I am a proud uncle.... I can just see that in a couple of years he is going to join me taking to the world camera in hand.

Wish I could have started that early in my life. Support him all the way.

Re: No better time than the present ... I guess.
Cheers guys.
I agree to a large extend on starting early, my mother gave my my first camera when I was around 12 or so. Bought from Game in the days when they had one megastore in KZN. A Polaroid which was given back to me two years ago. My dad made golfing noises when I was approaching high school, I should have listened.
We will see how his is doing. If he has any of arty talents of the females in my family, we might have started a great thing. I will check up the coming weekend whether he is snapping anything from the dog to the goldfish ...

Never too young to start. I got my first proper camera - not some or other hand-me-down in the family when I was about 11 - an Olympus 35RC. This is one film camera I'd still like to own.

The hardest part of being a parent it that kids do what kids want to do, not what parents want them to do. You can hope and pray they will develop the same interests as you, but there are no guarantees. All we can do is offer them opportunities.

Most agreement .. I told mine that they got me to raise them and see that neither of us have regrets in their choice of vocation. They get to choose, but I will tell them whether they are shooting too low.
