Default Eye-fi direct connect hassles - help.

Not sure who of you use eye-fi cards. I am having such issues with direct connect on my iPad.

I have obviously followed instructions and the card connects perfectly through my wi- fi network at home. But as soon as I try connect without the wi-fi it fails. During the set up my iPad can see the cards direct wifi network but can't connect, I never get the option to type in the password and the cant connect error is the same I get when I connect to wi-fi network with the incorrect password. In desperation I bought another eye-fi card - this one capable of uploading raw files although I can't really see my self uploading raw D800 files.

    Help.

The work around is always simple. I can't figure it out.

For those who don't know eye-fi cards set up a network between your camera, computer or iOS or Android device. Its used to transfer files, I want to use it to send a jpeg to my iPad to view on a larger hi res screen for myself or people participating in the shoot.

Ok solved - but not the way I wanted it to be - the Eye-Fi card is not compatible with the D800 in Direct Mode. Works fine through the wi- fi set up - direct mode, no way.

Apparently it needs a firmware update from Nikon. Pity that it took like a 100 emails for Sandisk in Europe to work out the problem. They phoned a few minutes ago.

I am so frustrated - was convinced it was the card and so bought a Eye-Fi Pro X2 - which arrived from the US this morning this also doesn't work - hope the update comes through soon.

Copy of mail subsequently received from Sandisk

"Regarding to our conversation, Eye-Fi engineering has found and confirmed a compatibility issue with the Eye-Fi card that impacts the use of Direct Mode in the Nikon D800. We are currently investigating an issue with the D800's SD slot that appears to contribute to a lack of steady signal while the Eye-Fi card is in Direct Mode which makes the Direct Mode feature incompatible with the camera. The Nikon D800/D800e passes all other wireless network tests and is compatible with wireless transfers via a wireless router"

Walter, what is the difference between the Eyefi and Eyefi Pro?

. The big difference is that the pro will upload Raw files the standard only jpeg. The standard is a class 4 card and the pro a class 6.

Not that I wanted it to upload huge D800 Raw files, just to monitor the shoot.

I bought the Pro card because I kind of figured that the top of the range card would work, I find that the websites dont explain the features that well.

When these things are problems it's often because the physical slot design attenuated the wireless signal apparently.

    Ok, got it.

I also wanted it for the monitoring, not file transfer. We tested it a year or so ago, and the transfer of a 1D (or 1Ds, can't remember) just took forever...

I think I should do a review again...

    Sean

It seems to take a while to get the flow going and then speeds up, you could also try the shuttersnitch app.

The way I have set up is with the twin card slots Slot 1 is my RAW storage - slot 2 is for jpegs of the appropriate quality to render on an iPad screen - which is not huge at all so the transfer is not of massive files.

So you feel the shuttersnitch app is preferable above the eye-fi native app?

Sean, I found SHuttersnitch to be better. I dont have the pro card so I setup (on the 1D) to write small jpegs to the card. The transfer is not instantaneous but is quite quick from camera to Ipad

I don't think you would achieve much more with the PRO card - I really can't see myself transferring the RAW huge RAW files - I think its really intended for "small" jpegs big enough to get a view on the iPad screen and big enough to upload to facebook.

By the way i grabbed some stuff from the eye-fi forum talking about the apps see pasted below.

"You've already mentioned one (advantage) of Shuttersnitch:full EXIF data. It also lets you set "Warning" messages based on inadvertant camera settings used for an image ( e.g., did you forget to change the ISO from 6400 back to 100?)

Also you say you want to show a "quick image". Do you not also wish to be able to critically evaluate the image(s) for quality...e.g. Sharpness? AFAIK, the Eye-Fi app does not show the full-size image--only full-screen, which is far too low res to evaluate sharpness. Shuttersnitch shows full-size images ( with a double tap). It is quite feature-rich compared to the Eye-Fi app (IMHO, based on limited use of the Eye-Fi app.)

With SS you can add your watermark to images after the transfer, ftp to your desktop computer, transfer to Dropbox, Facebook,... At present time I don't see any of that availabe in the Eye-Fi app. Shuttersnitch maintains its own file system and allows you to organize your images into "collection folders" (as opposed to dumpimg all images into the ipad's Camera Roll (ugh). So, do you want/need all that? Your call..."

there is more interesting stuff on the thread as well http://forums.eye.fi/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3878

I have tried the Eye-fi card in the 5DMK3 and have set the settings accordingly. The camera shows as connecting but connection is never achieved........Sean have you had this problem??

Hey Stan, I forgot to ask on FB if you'd updated the firmware on the card and what adapter you're using.
