It's a nice environment for pictures, but I think access to interesting areas, including the inside of the temple, are not allowed. On the Chinese New Year they have an open day and access for photography is allowed in most places, including the temple - subject to you leaving your shoes outside...

But on New Years day there are 100's of people...

PJ1, I took a group there a fortnight ago and everyone found it really worthwhile. It was my second trip and we spent about three hours there. You are in fact permitted to go anywhere, including inside the temple, but photography is not allowed inside the temple. The monks are extremely friendly and helpful and we had a very enlightening conversation about the Buddhist religion. Across the road from the main temple complex is a second complex of buildings which includes a museum and shop, both interesting but both restricted for photography. Never mind, the exterior of the extremely colourful buildings lets you shoot like you were in the middle of China - on the Highveld. A few hours there will be all you need, and if you want to move on somewhere else, we found the little town of Cullinan to be very worthwhile and will go back to spend a full day there. It's just 35km from the temple.

Pierre, I agree with Bruce. I think even under the circumstances he described, it's worth going to the temple. At this page on my FB you can also see a few of my attempts earlier this year...
