    Pepperation Delight

Was busy washing some peppers when the idea came up to photograph them, as they just seemed so photogenic? Not much planning went into the preparation of this so not the most creative setting. For any of those interested in the setup and having some fun, here’s a quick tutorial though.

    Gear:
    Nikon D80
    Nikon 50mm Lens
    Tripod
    1 x Soft box
    1 x Flash
    A4 paper
    Food!

The set-up was pretty straight forward (used a study desk):

Soft box mounted right above scene. A standard reflector was used as backdrop (black). Some plain A4 paper was used as reflectors to kick some fill light into the shadows of the `miniature’ scene. I used a small piece of glass to create some reflections in the foreground although a large sheet of perspex would’ve been ideal.

    Camera Settings:
    ISO 100
    Aperture f/9
    Shutter Speed 1/30
    TTL Flash Metering

    Straight out of camera result:

As you can see there were a few flaws in the scene; the edge of the glass shows up and the reflections are not very good. Cloned them out and applied some blur on the foreground.

    Some final tweaks and spices:

There could’ve been quite a few improvements in the image such as placing the soft box closer to the subject for better highlight reflections and evenly spread light. Better placing of A4 paper reflectors to lift the shadows. Spraying of the peppers with a glycerine mix for a fresher look. The setup of the scene regarding composition and `ingredients’ can also do with some improvement. Was only playing around though and my wife was getting hungry and needed the peppers… Was a good learning experience though.

Hope it sparkles some creativity for someone; questions, input or suggestions welcome on this topic!

Nice, well done. You don't need a fancy model for a nice shoot

Johan, I'm not sure how others are doing it but it kinda works for my standard (which is actually nonexistent).
