    Default Samsung PLS Panels

I want to purchase a new monitor (I am in no rush) and were investigating the new Samsung PLS panels. A supplier that I approached suggested the Series9 SB970 LED Monitor for photographers.

    He replied to my mail:
None of my current range includes this technology. I don’t think the range is yet available in South Africa (at least not through official channels), possibly due to the price. I will inquire with my supplier tomorrow...
    and the next day:
    Hi

Spoke to the Samsung guy (John) and here’s the info “from the horses mouth”

The PLS monitors aren’t yet on the South African Market. He wants to order about 20, but Samsung won’t ship less than a container load – 200 units. Samsung feel the price may be too high for the SA market, so are reluctant to bring in that quantity as it may not sell…

However John is still negotiating with Samsung – so there is a small possibility they will become available.

Price wise, If Samsung do import, the price will be around R11500.00 to R12500.00

There is however another option – John is may be willing to fly some in – but that would impact the price.

Sorry the news is not good… Really a pity because this range of displays is very well rated and ideal for your application

    Regards,
Thank you, and I agree, this is not good news. So back to the IPS panel investigation.... (question to self: is the better display technologies really worth the extra money for the amateur/hobby photographer?)

Also depends on how much printing you are going to do. If not much, then maybe reconsider.

Once you get an IPS Panel, you still have to calibrate it, so that is another expense (you can hire a Spyder calibration tool from ODP instead of buying).

I am still investigating all the options but will not spend more on a monitor than the cost for a Dell UltraSharp U2410 (which is around R5k).

Well, the U2412M is ~R2880 from wootware.co.za, which is an excellent buy.

Otherwise, I have seen some pretty good TN panels, although the small price difference between a norman TN panel and the U2412 is definitely worth the jump.
