The battery grip with xtra battery will not get the D800 close to 5DIII operating speed - it will make it equal the operating speed of the 5DIII.
The standard D800 is close to the operating speed of the 5DIII. In 1.2 crop mode the Nikon produces +- 25mp files, at 5fps, compared to the 22mp files from 5DIII at 6fps.
Will the extra fps really makes a huge difference? Don't know, in 3 seconds the Nikon guy will have 15 shots to choose from and the Canon guy 18 ?? Dealbreaker ???

If Chris puts up a case of wine, I will bet it (But I still can't get him higher up on the list, so I suspect it's gonna be a cheap wine... )

Sean so would some DIESEL get me higher on the list ?
http://www.beyerskloof.co.za/news.php?mid=167&pid=18
At R400 PER bottle, it tastes a "bit" better than the ordinary vinegar sold as wine .... When you are in Stellenbosch, do yourself a favour and pop in at Beyerskloof.
Sean, not to worry, I will patiently wait my turn on the list.

Funnily enough I thought about getting the D800 .. and then I remebered a 7D, a 500 f4 and .., well one can dream too!

Re: Canon 5D3 Availability
Hi Guys,
Trust me, we are just as frustrated. I mean we are in the camera selling business, we would love to get as many as we can.
The cameras are coming in drips and drabs. We stick religiously to the waiting list. (lessons learned early in this business).
No favors, no line skipping nothing.
Somebody will phone you if yours are here. You are off course welcome to contact us to hear how the list are progressing, but if you don't get a call we don't have a camera.
50% of our phone calls a day is;"when can I get my 5D, My D1X, My Nikon D4, My Canon 600 my Canon 500 My Canon 200-400.."
Why there is such short supply, me too cannot understand. This is not only a Canon SA thing, its a world wide thing.

Maybe you should redirect the calls to Canon, Hedrus, and see how they like it.
I can just imagine the marketing team at Canon SA trawling the 'net right now and looking
for something worthwhile to say at the road show tomorrow.
It must be hard to hold a road show when you have nothing to sell.
At least they know exactly what questions the audience will ask.

Walked across the road just now ... THREE guys standing their drooling, but still NO Mk III's in Bellville.
This must be a salesman's WORST nightmare - have clients, but have no stock ....

Aha - but, as will be announced at tomorrow's road show: Canon SA have also secured an exclusive distributorship for both rocking-horse droppings and hen's teeth!
That us sure to impress the audience.

Re: Canon 5D3 Availability
feedback time ....
the problem is worse than ever anticipated !!
The CURRENT waiting list should be resolved by mid July, or hopefully earlier.
BUT the big problem is that the way these guys kept on telling us just HOW good the 5D is .... MAN, I am sure half the audience will be adding their names to the waiting list by Monday morning !!!!!!!
stock - it is coming in, but slowly.
5D - this camera is even better than any of the threads on this forum has ever led us to believe !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Canon 5D3 Availability
I beg to differ on the suggested R900 difference between what a retailer sells lets say a D800 and a directly imported one.
There are no import duties levied on a directly imported dslr only vat.
http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-im...ails/84807189/
I suggest at least a R 3000 saving maybe more depending on rebates offered at the time.
Easy to organize via MyUSA - who handle everything.
Nikon SA certainly know this and they control using a monopolized stand - they refuse to accept the International Warranty on any Nikon dslr that is directly imported.

It's their job to dazzle you with smoke and mirror talk, Chris.
And yours, as an engineer, is to objectively assess the facts.
"Telling" does not constitute fact.
I just wonder HOW they "know" how good the 5D3 is.
Where did they get some cameras to actually use, unless they jumped the queue ahead of their customers, or imported gray?
At the Road Show did they tell you anything tangibly useful like:
1. Why South Africa is still waiting for 5D3's to trickle in, whereas the rest of the world has cleared their backlog.
2. Is it true that the 1DX has a major technical problem and we can expect even longer delays than on the 5D3?

I think that was on the 5DmkIII and the R900 difference was the cheaper price in South Africa (unless I missed a post somewhere)
That is $3499 from B&H
Shipping (postal service) is $124
Shipping (Fedex) is $266
So cheapest possible is $3622 to get it here, or R33,158 (vat inclusive) if the Customs oke agrees that there is no duties applicable (so only R2000 more expensive than ODP)
Which almost sounds like a deal if BH actually had stock.
As for the D800, the price would be $3122 (or about R28580) IF B&H would ship it to South Africa... but due to no stock being available, B&H will not ship to South Africa, until such a time as general stock levels for local clients have been reached...
MyUSA might be an answer... but B&H doesn't have stock... only taken pre-orders now...
by the way... The prices above exclude any kind of insurance...

Re: Canon 5D3 Availability
They didn't take a single question at the roadshow.......so it was all smoke and mirrors....and they went so far as to say that all the distribution problems are a thing of the past ......but we all know that is just plain BS....
Unfortunately Roger was not there due to his wife's illness.......So there is no more clarity on this issue than before!

Andre... you are now starting to sound bitter...
The 1Dx has been delayed for 8months already, the "why" has not been shared anywhere or with anyone... so yes, the delays have already been longer than the 5DmkIII - you answered your own question...
As to the backlogs all over the world being cleared... I have told you, Hedrus have told you, and you can check it for yourself on B&H... They also still run on pre-and back-orders... the demand is still too high for the slow trickle coming in... this is still a worldwide problem.
As for the 5DmkIII being an awesome camera... well I have read most of the reviews and wrote one myself... the camera is great. I have not found many people that dislike this camera... maybe one or two things that is not to their personal liking but on a whole, people think its a pretty decent upgrade if you are already in the Canon system.
I think I will be climbing out of this thread now... it's just repeating...

Why buy from B+H?
Adorama have stock; Amazon lists a dozen shops with stock and then there is ebay. As far as I can see,
B+H are the only ones who do not have stock.
Be that as it may, B+H have fully cleared their initial pre-order list on the 5D3, whereas I doubt that Canon SA
have satisfied 10% yet.

I guess this is where we differ, Sean. You see this as a worldwide problem, I don't. On 11 May, Adorama announced that all preorders on the 5D3 had been fulfilled (see Canon Rumors) and I am quite sure that is the case for the entire USA. I have family in Australia who can buy these off the shelf. People returning from London have played with them in the shops. I cannot find any reference to a worldwide shortage on the 5D3 at this time. What makes you think this is a worldwide problem? Please give me a reference. I see this as a South Africa problem. Remember, I am talking specifically about the 5D3 - not the 1DX, long lenses etc. which we all know have not been released yet and are not the topic of this thread.

LEt's not forget. WE slept late !!
Those that were FIRST on the list already had their cameras, even before the light leak issue. So there have been a couple of real life tests of these cameras.
There was (obviously) a Mk III on display, and on Friday night they went out and USED it. So they are in a position to give feedback.
PERSONALLY - I know a gent that will get his in the next week or two (NO, not me) ... then we will set about TESTING it, DIRECT comparison on the Mk II against the Mk III.
Some of the bits of info that got stuck in mind:
- there is one more button on the row on the left, this gives quick access to HDR and a couple of functions
- dedicated movie button
- DUAL card function
etc etc etc ....

The fact that if you phone Adorama or BH, they both currently say that it's only pre-orders or 2-3 weeks. Canon Rumours today mentioned (speaking about the rebates)
"...The 5D Mark III isn’t found in stock in too many places, so at least you get an extra month if you’ve been waiting to take advantage of the rebate when buying a 5D3..."
