Default Telephoto Lens for Canon 350d

I have a Canon 350d and I'm looking for a 120-400 or 150-500 sigma lens. What is available for me out there? I see the APO 170-500 lenses for under 6000 but on ODP its not rated very well. Adverts for the 150-500 from 8500 - can you please advice me or do anyone wants to sell for a good price? I'm scared that the lenses do not fit my 350. Im going to Namibia in 3 weeks time.

Whatever you buy, make sure it is Canon EF or EF-S mount. Both will work on the 350D (BTW, a great little camera).

Important point to remember with any long focal length lens is good support, either good bean bag or tripod.

Try the Classified section there might be something of interest.
I just this http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/classi...-3a5-6-3&cat=4 for R9000. He doesn't specify if it is a Canon/Nikon mount thought, drop him an email he might come around to your price range. Good luck.

I had the second generation 170-500 which did work on my 350D at the time. I cannot comment as to whether this is the case with the newer 150-500 (I've grown up since then and play only with very expensive toys!).

I noticed, but I started late in life with this interest. I feel so dumb between all these abbreviations, just came from google and made myself a list: EF-S for Canon and DC for Sigma, IS for Canon and OS for Sigma, USM for Canon and HSM for Sigma,I feel better now!!

No reason why HSM lens motors should'nt work on your camera - I would suggest however that buynig a used lens to test it before parting with your money. The 120-400 should work just fine and will be my preferrred choice over the old 170-500 and newer 150-500. Ditto Peter on the good support.

And you are not that old!!! How should I feel then?

Thanks, my age is wrong on my profile and don't know how to fix it. Just with about 4 years. I have to get a lens within 2 weeks time. I do have a decent tripod and monopod. Now looking for the lens. I don't want to go too expensive because I won't get to use the big lens that much.

Did mail you the details. Thank you. I found a lens: Sigma 150-500 on Gumtree for R7 000.00. still have to consider buying, its someother Lt from Bloemfontein. This is a big risk to take.

    Bloemfontein a risk?

Pay R2000.00 more at your "safe" local location?

Are we on the same planet?

If you are prepared to pay R8000.00 for a Sigma then i would rather pay R9000.00 for a canon 100-400, which, IMHO, is a lot better lens than Sigma. There were two sold on ODP Classifieds this month at R9000.00.

PS: These were both sold in much safer locations than Bloem!

Bloem is a popular location for scam ads as its beig enough not to raisr suspusion but chances are good the buyer will not be local. The OP was already concerend about losing money.

That said that specific add seemed OK. You also need to add 200-400 for courier services.

    The local lens
1 allows her to lool arround some more and not be rushed
    2 inspect the actual lens
3 she can make a lower offer - that might be accepted

yes the 2 100-400s were beter deals but they very seldom go bellow 10500 except if they old or well used. If you can find a good one for 9 I agree it would be better.

Ok, so I am on a different planet; "PLANET BLOEM, SCAM HO"
Now I know why my stuff does not sell; wrong location! Damn, I will have to relocate! And I always thought Bloem is a decent place.

Pf, nothing to do with this post but do you know that Bloem is also regarded as the HO for satan worshippers? Three to four years ago we had the situation where Nigerians used Bloem as the centre for for child kidnapping, and I am not joking about this!

Back to the post, I can always help if you need something in Bloem.

Anna I'd take Koos op on his over, thats if you trust him.

Koos sorry to hear that your from bloem. l Life's not fare.

Ann just rember a long lens helps with framing 20-80 meters away. @100-200 meters the heat and haze will make even a great lens fuzzy.

Where in namibia are you going to ?

most of namibia maks for great landscapes

Koos, I spoke to the guy this morning and he is some other Lt Col in the army there. I have checked him on the internet and also found him on FB. He will see if he can arrange to deliver the lens to Potchefstroom where i can inspect the lens before making any payment. Don't know if you know people in the force there and I don't know if i am allowed to mention his name?

We drive up to Windhoek, sleep there for 2 nites and then to Thumeb for the rest of the 2 weeks. I can not wait to see that part op the country. This will be my first time going out over any BORDER!!!

    Anna,
I am pretty sure you can trust this army guy, you see most of these officers are from out of town so they must be ok.
On a more serious side, get him to phone me and i can always check it out for you. Best is to refer him to Artic Digital in Preller Square, ask Jackie to have a look at it . Very helpfull young lady and trustworthy, must be from Centurion! ( Sorry PF, had to take this last dig at you, hehehehe!)
