    Default Gimp

Anybody using GIMP as an alternative to PS? It is open source and free.
GIMP ver 2.8 has just been released. Downloads for Windows and Mac platforms available from www.gimpusers.com

Version 2.8 for Linux/Windows/Mac handles 16 bit colour! Read the "whats new in 2.8" article at www.gimpusers.com
Visit http://sourceforge.net to download the Linux version.

2.8 is up and running, just need to get some time to explore it
Like the single window interface . Turn it on from main image window via windows | single window mode
Seems 16 and 32 bit color is only in the 2.10 development branch at this stage so 2.10 should be a viable alternative to PSlop

Yip, I started using GIMP from version 1.0.x (1999) and it's still my preferred image editor.
The 8-bit per channel restriction has always been a pain though so I've fallen back to CinePaint for 16-bit and 32-bit per channel support mainly for 16-bit per channel TIFFs (GIS data).

I'm really happy that the developers are finally getting GEGL integrated into GIMP. It's been a long wait!

As good as Abobe software is, I can't see myself forking out R8K for Photoshop CS5/6 and then another R2-3K for an upgrade every couple of years.
I'd rather put that money into some decent L glass.

Besides that I much prefer using a Linux bash shell for scripting workflows (a few GIMP script-fu scripts and a bash/python script and you can do nearly anything).

There are two RAW editors that can be used together with GIMP. RawTherapee (32 and 64 bit versions) and UFRaw. RawTherapee can be downloaded from http://rawtherapee.com
