    Default Repair Costs

Sent the Nikon S3100 in for repair and was amazed at the "quote" I received. This was because I have not yet given them a copy of the invoice showing the date of purchase for the guarantee repair.

The quoted cost to repair is R100 more than the purchase cost of the camera :-(

The camera is displaying the dreaded "lens error" and the lens won't retract all the way, the internet is full of reports with this happening on Coolpix cameras. So it seems to be a throw away after the guarantee expire. :-(

And they do not have stock of the lens assembly either.......................

How reliable is the Canon range of point and shoot models regarding this, seeing that I had a similar failure on a HP digital camera years ago as well?

Even the new Nikon P510 has an issue if you switch it on with the dust cap on... Still to be released locally.

Fanie, yep it is for the parts, but I think most go into labour.

I got a quote for BlackBerry repair ring. R700+. Ordered the replacement part from ebay {$8 + $10 shipping}, had to buy special screwdrivers at about R45 bucks, and spend about 10 min replacing it. Total cost for repair not much, excluding the time I spend on the internet.

If you take that into account, figure kinda the same.

When I was late 79/80 in USA, it was cheaper to buy a new TV than getting it repaired.
Same road, on pro consumer goods, do you agree ?

    Hannes
