Default Looking for a speedlight, advice pls

Its about time I invested in a speedlight and im trying to figure out what I should buy.

I shoot with a D90 and D3000 as a second body. Mostly functions, small weddings, events etc.

My budget allows for an SB700 or Sigma 610 DG ST Super
Obviously id rather go for the Nikon but would the Sigma be worth the R800 less? What are the major differences between the two and what limitations could I find with the Sigma?

    Thanks

Buy the Lumos. They're, much cheaper than the SB700, pricier than the YN flashes, but significantly more reliable. I've got four of the Lumos and use them for all my work - weddings, corporate, portraits, etc.

Google "midwest photo exchange", and look there for the LumoPro LP160. They're HIGHLY recommended by David Hobby himself (who's probably the most well known strobist on the planet).

Sean, I also E-mailed Lumo directly and asked for their SA agent. Will post any info here as it arrives.

They're not available here. I imported all of mine. Like I said, google MPEX and buy them there. They guys at MPEX are amazingly helpful, and will help you as much as you need

    Hi.

Saw it at importitall (SA Online store) for R 2, 210.00. (price R/$ exchange rate dependent).

I bought a few items with them in the past. They buy from the Amazon catalogue.

    See product here

Yeah but R2210 is significantly more than what it costs if you just import it yourself. I don't see any reason to buy it from importitall if you can just get it direct from MPEX

My two cents worth is that I would not look at anything that does not work with the Nikon CLS. I went through a stage when I didn't really understand it and used my off camera flashes set manual. If you want to save run a watch on the classifieds and buy an SB 800 or SB 900 as soon as it comes up. But be quick. I have an SB 800 and two SB 900 s - all bought on ODP classifieds.

From Kevin Deskins, Product Manager and Technical Support - LumoPro: "At this time we have no authorized dealers in South Africa or even Africa for that matter. However our dealers are willing to ship internationally. MPEX.com in the US and Cameratools.nl in the EU."

Why, when they have a far superior cheaper model (Nissin) that works in manual and TTL.

I don't know if they are superior (I can't compare them with lumo because I have never worked with them) but I like the nissin's for the fact that they also have a built in slave cell

Well I have read excellent reports on these Lumos, which were designed in collaboration with the Strobist community, pointing out their excellent price and features, and I would like to buy a couple of them locally to save me the hassle of importing them myself. I am not looking for additional TTL flashes but for reliable, high-output manual OCFs, which these Lumos are. I presume ODP already stocks more than one brand of speedlight to cater for a wider range of tastes and requirements. To each his own.

Astra, I think the problem is more on the support side. With no repair/Distributer network in SA, you are a bit stuck if they fail for some reason. If you see them as a 'consumable' and have a few in your bag then, no problem.

The Strobist community talks about a vivitar 285-HV as well @ a much cheaper cost than the Lumos but if u ask me for a few Hundred more Ill take the Nissin (More features) but hey as you said each his own.

I can vote for the Nikon CLS. Borrow some flashes if needed, check it out. It is the reason I stick with Nikon.
