Thanks to all the replies, I appreciated the feedback and comments.

Another question would be, thinking of moving into the wedding photography as a part time hobby / job, testing the waters and trying to get myself a new camera so the current one will act as back up, would a the following lens be any good for weddings:

    Nikon 18-105mm VR f/3.5-5.6 lens??

I know about the better wedding lenses and read up a lot on the forum, will be getting the 50mm lens as well as the 35mm lens, have the stock 18 - 55mm and then the 55mm - 200mm. Since I have been reading up a lot and checking prices I know I am a bit stretched for the 24 - 70mm and 70 - 200 2.8, would love them but at a later stage, more towards the end of the year.

Would this lens be any good?

The 18-105 not a bad lens at all. It has some chromatic aberration in the corners, but in the rest of the frame it is quite sharp. Think it is a great lens if you only have one lens to choose for weddings. I will definitely get the 50mm as well . A great lens to use in low light conditions

    Like!

Also remember that the advice you get is based largely on who is paying the largest commission to the salesperson that week.

Very very true. Newer sensors are better, but waiting for the next release will leave you without a camera for a long time as there is always going to be a next release. I personally think that the current trend towards higher resolution and better low-light performance is a very positive one. What you need to ask is how large you are planning on printing.

Think about what is required to fill a double-page magazine spread as far as resolution is concerned. In reality, good glass, good support (or an understanding of camera shake, shutter speed and so on) and good exposure are all that is really necessary. While it's nice to always have the newest and the bestest, the edge generally comes from the photographer, not the equipment.
