D7000 discontinued??

Hi everyone!

I a, in the market for a D7000 and been to Makro hust now to enquire if they keep the D7000 and was informed that it has been discontinued??? Any true in this, appartently they await the new D8000??

Do anoyne have any info on this, as now I am in a catch 22, buy a D7000 and 2 months dowm the line the D8000 is released.

If anyone has any info to share it will be appreciated.

Buying from Makro is one thing… but I've learnt not to take photographic advice from the same place I buy bulk toilet paper from.

LOL - I presume I was a bit stupid in taking in the comment by the sales person, but have burnt my fingers before on "new" on the market and a couple of months later (4 to be accurate) and then have an item clasified as "old stock", and would like to aviod it this time, but then again technology today, is tomorrow old age technology

LOL - I presume I was a bit stupid in taking in the comment by the sales person, but have burnt my fingers before on "new" on the market and a couple of months later (4 to be accurate) and then have an item clasified as "old stock", and would like to aviod it this time, but then again technology today, is tomorrow old age technology

A lot depends on the camera you have now. Can you wait? What about lenses? What is your upgrade path? Can you extract the value out of the camera right out of the box?


My main camera is five years old! The more I learn (and I have been at this photography thing quite a while) the more I understand and experience that the camera is least of my problems! For example: I had coffee with fellow ODP member, and he mentioned something about the camera that we both have. Thinking about it while driving home, I changed it on my camera - and it made a huge difference in high speed focussing performance. So it is an ongoing learning process - relentlessly ongoing!

+10 to that! I shoot with a Nikon D2X which was originally released in 2005, and I use some fast glass that was discontinued a long time before that, and I am still way more than satisfied with the performance of my 2-generations-back pro body.

Your camera will not suddenly decide to start taking cr@ppy images simply because it realises that there is a new kid on the block. The only two possible issues you may need to watch out for are compatibility and the resale value of what you have purchased. Compatibility will not be an issue with such a modern body as the D7000, and then resale value is never that close to original new price anyway because once you walk out the shop door with it in your sweaty palms it immediately devalues by a significant amount anyway. Your investment is for the functions it offers you and the imags you will take with it, not its resale value, or at least that should be the way you view it in my opinion. Bodies are considered by many to be 'disposable' items for these reasons.

If the camera you are considering will satisfy your requirements now and for an acceptable period moving forward then it is the right camera for you irrespective of whether there is a shiney new model just around the corner waiting to burst your bubble.

I tried to keep up with the latest and greatest PC gaming equipment for several years a long while back, and all I got for my efforts was the latest and greatest for a few months before it was considered has-been equipment, and a cupboard FULL of very costly hardware that I can't use for anything anymore. I still have a graphics card in my cupboard that I paid R 10 000 for back in the day that is useless to man or beast now, and every time I look at it I wonder why I ever chased the latest and greatest to start with.

True, but the newer model should do things considerable better than it's older counterpart. Progress being progress and all. So, while yesterdays technology might be fine for the non-professional and will certainly be producing images of the same quality as it did way back yesterday, a professional could find himself at a distinct disadvantage.

Quite true, but in all honesty a professional is not going to be buying his kit from Makro, and will certainly have a much close finger on the pulse of what is going on in the world of new technology from companies such as Nikon and Canon, hence the advise from Leo and I to consider slightly older technology if it satisfies the needs of the OP.

There are currently nothing on the cards about the D7000 being replaced. That said, The D3100 was just replaced by a D3200 (24mp) which means that if we look at the previous trends, we should see the D5200 replacement coming in the second half of the year, and the D7000 replacement somewhere after that.

I might be completely wrong though, but honestly, we heard nothing (and I know your pain, both of my last Macbooks were replaced by a new model two weeks or so after I bought mine)

We struggled to get hold of them for quite some time, but ODP does have stock (well, they had this morning!)

Apple has a two week grace period you can return goods to them… only problem for you is SA doesn't have Apple.

Consumer digital runs on about a 2-year product cycle. I expect the D7100 to be announced towards the end of this year. I wouldn't sweat it, though. The D7000 will still be an excellent camera.

That's one of the reasons I love my Bronica ETRSi. It's the latest model, and I don't have to worry about an upgrade any time soon.
