    Default Canon 7D replacement

Anyone know if the 7D will be placed soon given that the 5Dmk3 is out.
Not sure whether to purchase the 7D now or wait.

It looks a bit like the 5D MkIII can do pretty much what the 7D can do, but in full frame (minus 2 less frames per second). So I'm not sure if canon are in such a rush to release an updated 7D just yet. I think they are also carefull not to eat into the 1Dx market (when it eventually arrives) cos that is meant to be the FPS speed king.

When the dust settles, and all the bugs on the 5D iii and the 1DX are sorted, and more importantly, the sales numbers and market research data comes out on these two pro camera's then canon will see where the niche is, and put something together. Hence, I think we are looking at at least another 6 months?

The 7D is still a good camera for the price.

Following all the rumour sites and such, I do not think we will see a 7D replacement for quite some time, I expect at least a year. the current 7D is an excellent camera.

If the 7D is to remain an APS-C, what other big improvements would there be? The 5D mkII was in sore need of a replacement, the 7D, not so much IMHO.

Incremental improvements only, I suspect. It could usefully be improved with the newer 61 point focus system, if that can actually be used in APS-C format. Never mind about it competing with other up market models in the range, they've coped with exactly that before a few times. The EOS 3 was the first with the 45 point system, after all and the 7D was launched about the same time as a new 1D prompting the same "will it take sales away" comments.

A locking dial on the top would also be useful. Also a three stage shutter release button, to give an instant high speed/continuous selection, would be good, like the old white button on the A1 motor drive did, but more elegantly. Come to think of it, the 5DIII and 1DX could also benefit from this.

Newer Digic processors would also be useful in writing times to latest CF cards.
