Default video format for DVD player

I use Sony Movie Maker 9 HD to edit my video clips. This is then output as .avi format.

I now want to write this to DVD for a friend who wants to view this on his DVD player.

    QUESTION -
What format should the video be in for viewing on a DVD player ?
What conversion software do you recommend for this ?

I am sure this must have been answered previously - a link to such answer would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few possibilities depending on the DVD player that your friend has because most DVD players nowadays are able to play AVI files encoded with XVid, DivX and in some instances other codecs.

In order to be safe and ensure maximum compatibility with all DVD players though I would suggest that you use DVD video authoring software to convert your video to the standard DVD VOB format. There are several options but if you have Nero CD and DVD authoring software it will do this for you. There is an application that comes with the Nero suite called Nero Vision which is used to re-encode your video into DVD VOB format, create the DVD menu, and burn the disk once it is complete. There is comprehensive help built into Nero that will guide you in the process.

Once you have added the AVI file or files to your DVD Video compilation, Nero Vision's conversion process will re-encode the video and audio stream into the correct format in preparation for burning to disk. The menu creation component can be used to add your own background image and audio to the menu, and add and name each of the video files that can be played off the disk.

If you get stuck using Nero Vision i'm happy to give you a hand in getting it done. Just let me know and I will do what I can to help you. I am going away to the Hogsback mountains for the weekend but will be back on Sunday afternoon.

In Vegas use the Template DVD 720x576 widescreen PAL. Then render as MainConcept MPG-2 go custom and select "include audio". You will need DVD-A (Architect) to make the DVD or at least "prepare".

You have to convert the avi to mpeg2 that's the dvd standard.

Take a look at this free program - IMGBurn, which will convert your MPEG to DVD format, though its interface can be a bit daunting maybe.

You may already have DVD Creator, which also has the facility to convert MPEG-2 to DVD format.

    Source: Burn avi onto DVD

It's also worth bearing in mind (if you're planning on doing this often), that most modern DVD players, even the inexpensive ones, will play mpeg files directly from the disk (or USB port), with no conversion necessary.

    Hope it helps.
