Yes, the minute I click "connect" to the Internet the CPU temperature climbs from the 40's right up to the high 70's/80's and remains there.

But is there a corresponding spike in CPU usage?

I must check mine too. I bought a dongle thing yesterday and it, the dongle, does seem to get quite hot when in use. Next time I use it I will check the temps. Maybe the macbook is being used as a big heatsinc for the dongle

Re: Mac temperature and fan app.
For S&G's I monitored my cpu temp while connecting and disconnecting via my dongle and while there is an increase in cpu temp it certainly isnt as dramatic as yours Roberto.
Attachment 8315
It peaked at around 60°c which coincided with my modem dropping the connection.
If it was me I'd remove the bottom and check to see what sort of debris is in there.

Re: Mac temperature and fan app.
Not for MAC, but the VC connect software {WIN7} also increased my CPU temp by running in the background. Whatever its doing, its using lots of CPU resources. That can be your culprit {Dialup software}.
Try to connect via LAN and see if it makes any difference. Also some of these damn adds eat away at CPU resources.

Hello Williams.
Im not computer savvy so attached you will find temperatures before and after switching on the dongle. The higher temperatures readings are after the dongle was switched on and timed for a minute and 30 seconds.

Ok, here's what puzzles and concerns me… your fan speed isn't increasing as the temperature increases. Have you installed any third party fan controller like SmcFanControl?

No, I only installed all Canon and Photoshop CS5 software.
I use the machine only for editing and uploading.

Was thinking exactly the same thing... it's like the speed controller on the fan is fried... maybe not the best choice of words

Have you also considered adding ironing to your list?
I can just see the tagline... Ironing? There's a mac for that
Like I said, I'd open that puppy up and have a look at the fans and vents. Even give the unit a solid blast of canned air (try to prevent the fans from spinning though). Then download smcfancontrol and increase the fan speed.

Try to connect via LAN and see if it makes any difference.
I have connected via LAN and the temperature is sitting on 47 degrees for over 5 minutes now.
It could very well be that the dongle is the problem?

Or the Dongle software as I have mentioned, and maybe even your tower switching 2G/3G and somehow the software working extra hard.
Investigate if you can change the fan setting to be more aggressive in cooling.
