Default Mac temperature and fan app.

    Hi

Does anyone know of a good Mac temperature and fan app?

My laptop gets so hot underneath the left hand side I can barely keep it on my lap and after a short time the fans start to rev loudly and this is merely when browsing.

It has been rather hot and humid in ESL this year so that may be a factor?

    Thanks in advance!

On my MBA a 4-finger swipe to the right will get you into a view that you can configure a viewer for that. It's a standard thing IIRC, but if you're looking for something specific, try the AppStore. There's almost certainly something there. I've seen 70C+ and fanspeeds up to 4000+rpm

Just downloaded and ran Check My Temp from Mac App store. Took a desktop screen shot. Not sure if you able to read the figures though?

The fans seem to have quietened down rather but the machine and charger is cooking.

Looks a bit hot to me, but then your fans would have gone ballistic if the CPU's were getting damaged... Just checked mine (I run iStat Pro) and CPU is running at 71 degrees (but it's on batter and not processing anything except the web browser)

    Hi Sean

I'm not quite sure what batter is but my CPU runs 12 degrees higher than yours and I'm merely browsing on ODP, nothing else.

I will also download iStat Pro later this evening and compare figures as I have read that Check My Temp has had issues with some invalid GPU sensors.

    Thanks!

I didn't know about these widgets such as isat, so downloaded it and I'm seeing the cpu on my MBpro is running at 43 / 44 degrees whilst browsing, will check again when I'm using NX2 etc, interesting.

It's the stuff you make the flapjacks with on the handrest while rendering video or 12,000 RAW files

So I have just switched on my MBP, logged on to the internet, downloaded istat and installed and these are my readings.

on a MBPro I'm browsing and using NX2 editing raw files right now, temp of CPU is 47 degrees.

Wow, your machine is running nice and cool John. Mine is currently sitting on 82 degrees as I type and the fans are going crazy.

I will have someone take a look at it next week.

    Enjoy the week-end!

My fans spin up big time if I hit about 75% and it will stick to about 4500rpms unless I push more load... if the fans have kicked in, the temp drops quite quickly to about 65% and will then stay there untill CPU usage drops down

Sean, do you think it's something I should not worry about?

I'm on an Acer Aspire 1 netbook now, the CPU core temp is sitting at 40 degrees and the fans are pretty quiet.

Roberto, to be honest, I am not sure... when I was more involved in IT, we had a top ceiling of 80 degrees... if a server ran to much over 80degrees, they tended to destroy themselves, and start giving errors.

Ideally I want my computers to run 55-65 degrees or slower, otherwise I definitely see a slowdown in processing.

Firstly, I would check that your airvents are actually open. More often than not, that is the problem... if it's constantly running, high, I would have somebody look at it though...

As Sean said, firstly check to see if all the vents are unobstructed - blow any dirt out of them that you see. Your cpu definitely seems to be running on the high side. A difference of 20°C between your cpu temp and the heatsink temp is quite large - you may not have a decent thermal transfer from the cpu to the heatsink (think dirt buildup, loose or misplaced heatsink). Unfortunately this is not something you could sort out so it will have to go in to get checked.

    Hello Peter

The machine is virtually brand new and has been switched on probably a dozen times.

Then I would suspect that the heatsink has not been seated properly onto the cpu and would get that checked out first to eliminate it as the cause. If that is fine I would start looking at obstructions to the airflow - kinked heat pipe or fins on the heatsink.

FYI... I think I have discovered the overheating issue.

When operating Adobe Bridge, PS5 etc the CPU temperature sits around 40 to 55 degrees Celsius however once I have logged onto the internet the temperature climbs and stays around the 80'S mark.

I am currently using the Cell C 2Gig/month data dongle when on the road.

    Very strange...

Are you monitoring your cpu usage? Does it spike when you're using the dongle?
