I agree, but the 5D2 was already an awesome body. I think Nikon users have far more reasons to jump from a D700 to a D800, due to the old body lacking so many features to compete seriously with Canon.
I am surprised that the US price difference between 5D3 and D800 is so big. Perhaps the 5d3 price will drop eventually.

Well the noise reduction improvement looks to be at least 2 Stops so that might be a good reason to buy new.

But the question remains whether this is not a good alternative to the 1Dx ... and its a lot of money less.
I can see using this for sport events. 6ps is not that bad, and if you get the right image it is going to be superb.

Stadig oor die klippertjies!!
Not so long ago the 5Dii = d700 = D3. D3s better than D3 by 1/2 to 2/3's. D4 looks like = D3s. 1D4 might = D4. More than 2 = 2 1/2 OVER 5dii then make the 5DIII 1 - 1 1/2 stops better than 1DX ?
I think not. Canon will not be stupid enough to fit a higher MP sensor with 1 - 1 1/2 stops better ISO in a cheaper body from the same era. If so, the 1D4 is doomed !

If we consider what Canon did with the 7D, anything is possible.

What was that ? 7D never made the 1D4 obsolete

As far as I know Sport Photograpghy is hell expensive so if you sporting R100 000+ Lenses do you want the "alternative". I think 1D and 5D are just for differant things. The question here should be are you getting $1000 worth of upgrade?

Well for the foreseeable future, the consumer gets to decide if he/she can justify the difference in cost between the 5D2 and the 5D3 as Canon are still going to sell the 5D2 alongside the new beast.
Maybe they just have lots of old stock

Re: FINALLY! - Introducing the Canon 5D Mark III
When it comes to claimed ISO stops of improvement, and higher ISO settings, I believe it is important to remember to differentiate between jpg files and raw files. The jpg image will have had in-camera noise reduction carried out, and with it a high likelihood of some loss of detail.
Kobus took a very logical and realistic line of thought to try and give some realistic expectations of the cameras high-sio performance and image quality, in raw shooting. In less than three years Nikon managed to squeeze perhaps 2/3 stop improvement out of their sensor with the same size pixels.
Canon have had a little more time than that with the 5Dmk3, compared to the 5Dmk2, and pixel sizes are almost the same, so it makes more sense to expect something similar...and considering how good the image quality is already on the 5dmk2, this will be a great result in real world shooting conditions.
The Canon 1DX and the 5Dmk3 are clearly sharing similar levels of pixel technology, given that they are being introduced at almost the same time, but with that in mind the slightly larger pixels of the 1DX should give it a slightly better result at really high iso settings.
Those are my thoughts anyway,

Yes it never did, but a lot of people decided to rather buy two 7Ds than one 1D4, because it would seem the IQ is not that different.
I am not huge on knowledge of model lifetimes, but did the 7D not see the 5D2 come and go? There are some 7D tech in the new 5D3, which speak much of the 7D considering its low retail price considering.

I think canon have made a great all round camera. It seems they have put all the great features of the 7D onto an improved full frame sensor. And then just dumbed it down enough so that it won't destroy the 1Dx market, and leave space for the 7D iii to fill the place of the advance amateur sport/wildlife camera.

Re: FINALLY! - Introducing the Canon 5D Mark III
I generally don't care much for new gear announcements, but this has been 4 years in the making so I cannot resist adding a few thoughts:
- Upgraded video functionality and a sensor optimized for video and stills. R&D that still guys have to pay for that they probably won't use.
- The improved focus system, weather sealing and faster fps means that the new 5D moves from being a landscape/studio camera to a great all rounder.
- The announcement that got me most excited was the new flash and wireless transmitter that uses radio. That's huge. If it can overcome the poor sync speed offered by the markII (1/150th) and can offer wireless control over flash, I'll start saving today.
The two things the Mark II was unbelievably bad at: focussing and syncing with flashes/transmitters, seem to be addressed.

Oh Bugger!!!!! When Did I Miss the release of the 7D ii. Sorry could not resist
As usual the new camera seems like a must have , but does the expense justify the use? I faced a similar problem with the 500mm f/4.0 L, buy the mark1 or wait for the Mark2. I really could not justify the expense of the newer model and hence got the mark1.
Now coming to the 5D, the Mk1 was an excellent piece of equipment, but the 5D2 added a host of features that made it quite a bit better and justifiable, but I cant see me changing to the 5D3, the newer features are not something I would use for the work I do ( I did have the 5D and have the 5D2).
At the end its up to each tog to decide if they want the newer model or if they can make do with the older one. The price of the new cameras and lenses is just plain scary, the EF 200-400 F4.0 X1.4 is expected to retail around USD 10999 ( Canonrumors), I was waiting for that lens as it falls nicely into the focal range I would like to add to my kit, but honestly I cant justify the expense!
