Default Advice on purchasing a second hand Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS

    Hi everyone.

I have an opportunity to purchase a second hand Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM for R13500.00. It is in pristine condition, and I have had the opportunity to test the lens and it looks very sharp.

Please advise if you feel the lens is price right. I have seen quite a few cheaper ones on the net but as I said earlier it is in "like new" condition. I need to make payment by tomorrow luch time if I am to collect it on Friday.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You are the only one who can decide that....it's tested and it's good.....so is it worth it to you.I personally would not pay that much.....offer R12 500....they can only say no.....then the ball is back to you!

New that lens is being offered for R12,329.00 on SA Camera's website and R12,092.00 on ODP so I'm going to say no, on the surface it's not a good deal.

Thanks guys, It is the IS version of the lens Williams so has been replaced with the version II at R23500.00. I have also already made an offer of R13000.00 but the guy wont budge.

    Thanks for the advise!

The prices I mentioned are for the MKI which is still available for sale, new and under full warranty.

Of course, if he's selling the MkII for that price then it's a pretty good price.

Question you have to ask yourself, assuming it's as good as you say it is, are you prepared to lose it for R500? If it's worth it and you want a clean 2nd hand lens in "as new" condition. R500 is a snip you can handle...

Thanks guys. Was happy to pay the R13.5K until a college mentioned that they feel a second 70-200 2.8 is should go for between 12 - 12.5K. So was just trying to get a feel of what other peoples opinions were.

Thanks again...... think I am going to go for it!

Older mk1 Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS L 2nd hand - should be priced at R12000 for (extra great condition - maybe add R500)
    Canon 70-200 f2.8 L (non IS) 2nd hand - should be priced at R8000
They are regulary sold at those prices on this site if you patient.
If you pay a bit more and you happy with the item - its not the end of the world - the R1000-R1500 you overpaid won't matter when you have the lens in your hand and enjoying it (only matters if or when you want to sell it)

China, you know you are comparing the non_IS (your link) with the used IS version here?

Craig is looking at a used IS version as per heading of this thread while your links goes to the non_IS version advert.
here is Orms' advert for the non_IS,

I sincerely hope that we are not getting back to the Dude era of this site! Let's remain civil and not use terms like "China" unless you happen to personally be on those terms with the poster already.

Craig I think that is not a bad price.

bit more than he would get when he sells it to a shop, but a lot less than if you bought it second hand from a shop .... so both of you score.

STUNNING lens ! (I have one and LOVE it)

now save up and buy the 2x converter mark 3 ......
