Okavango -Kit to take
I am going to Okavango in April. We are going by plane and there is a 20kg limit on baggage which must be packed in soft bags. This includes hand baggage.(Flights from Maun are in light planes)
Will a 70-200mm with a 1.4 converter be enough reach?
What suggestions do the good people of ODP have
Thanks in advance

If it is Nikon, the 70-200 works very well with the new Nikon TC 2.0E III…
Support?

Thanks for your input
It the Mk II version of the Canon. I will try the 2TC before I go.
What do your suggest for support for an old man like me

I took a 1D4 with a 500 and a 7D with a 70-200 and 1.4x. If you go for birding (fish eagles, skimmers and bee-eaters), you can't go wrong with the 500. On a 1.6 crop factor like the 7D, the 500 may be too long for the fish eagles. If the body has a 1.6 crop factor, I would suggest a minimum of 400mm. You would need to acquire autofocus very quickly. I think the 2x converter will be very frustrating. Best support, if on the aluminium boats, is a tripod with wimberley head for long lenses or out of hand with 70-200. In my gallery you will find photos of the boats used, with the cameras on tripods.

Thanks for your advice
I have both a 1D4 and a 7D and a 400mm DO lens. I will weigh the 7D, 1D4, 400 DO, 7-200, 1.4TC, Tripod & Wimberley, Batteries etc. Looks like the wife wife will get a 4.2Kg allowance for clothes, make up, cream .
ps I won't tell her what you said

Graham,
going on a trip like that you can't not take both bodies and the 400 + 70-200 + 1.4x + maybe a shorter lens.
Get a large camera backpack that fits it all and take that as your hand luggage. You can always apologise for the weight if they complain and tell them you are a pro or journalist and you need it!
Enjoy the trip

The problem is not the first plane up, it's the small plane going in... it has a very real weight limit (I know ODP trips have to specify passenger weight as well on some trips)
I suggest you find out if you can't buy extra weight on the plane (usually possible) but then there is a locked extra allocated weight for your luggage

Thanks. I contacted Wilderness Safaris and managed to buy a "extra seat" on the small plane transfers. This will solve my problem and the wife will be able to take a few clothes with. Good news just before valentines day
Good stuff!
