    Default SD Card Question

Sandisk Ultra SDHC 16GB (15MB/s 100x) vs Sandisk SD 8GB Extreme Pro 45MB/s

These 2 cards cost more or less the same (R509 vs R557). The cheaper one is double the size, but slower. If I am not going to use my camera (Canon 60D) for video, will the cheaper, slower card be ok?

The 16Gb version is only Class 4 which is too slow for the 60D when shooting hi-speed continuous. If you just shoot one shot at a time then it's fine.

I have a 60D too, and currently use 2 cards ; a SanDisk Extreme 8GB (30 MB/s) and a LEXAR Professional 8 GB 133x Speed (not sure what the latter's MB transfer rate is). Both perform extremely well and I never had the feeling that the speed of either card is a negative factor. Also only photo (RAW) shooting, no video.

Not sure if this will help you.

    Good luck !

Yeah Sandisk is the best according to MANY tests on the web. I have a 16GB Extreme. I was looking at tests and Sandisk appears to be the closest in terms of their claimed speed i.e. 30mb/s was tested to 24-27mb/s where other cards were in the class 4 speed ratings but were sold as class 10!!

Hi Sean, will the Sandisk Extreme (ie 30MB/s) card be okay on my 550D and taking continuous shots for Avian photography ?

I would be interested in knowing how fast a camera can write to a card from its buffer?

That all depends on the speed of the relevant card. They differ widely.

Yes, i understand the speed on the card, but what speeds can the camera itself capable of writing at?

I did a little google search on this and the information does not really seem to be easily found.
What i did find was that a Nikon D7000 writes at about 45 mb/s. So buying a card at a higher write speed would probably be wasted.

I would assume the better the camera, the better the processing and write speeds will be. There also seems to be a whole host of conditions that affect the write speed, such as image format, quality, etc....

Just FYI... for video, you need at least a class 6 card (that means it can do a minimum 6mb/s continuous write speed ) the other speeds quoted on a card are typically the maximum possible burst rate in a perfect situation.
