Is the S & A workshop going ahead or will you be running a beginners one?

Faraway: The PE/J-bay area will have a S&A workshop.
jventer - I don't really present in Jhb, basically combine them with the Pretoria area for the theory and depending on the practical, wherever is easiest or most convenient. For the Jhb people its Kyalami if motorsport is voted in, Zwartkops for the Pretoria students.

    Hi Simon

I guess one would need access to some decent glass to get full value out of these sessions?

    Thanks

Francois: for the rally - 70-150mm is more than enough. I do most of my rally shots with a 24-105 on a 1D body.

The surfing, 300mm minimum, but preferably 400+ depending on the surf conditions. With the shorter lenses one has to move closer to the actual surfing, sometimes shooting from the rocks and waiting for them to move inshore a bit before shooting, but using the 500 with a 1.4x TC means I can stand back and little away from the direct spray.

I sometimes allow my students to use my lenses, to get the feeling for handling the bigger stuff. All done under my strict supervision with me brandishing a baseball bat.

Sounds like you guys (and gals?) are going to have a blast. I'm at the rugby Friday afternoon/evening but I'm sure we'll run into each other at the Billabong or Rally over the weekend.

I fear I might suffer severe feelings of inadequacy with my 70-300 in the presence of the mentioned monsters!

We need a lens rental place in PE!

A couple years ago I saw an advert in the EP Herald for a place that was starting up, but it seems as though it suffered a quiet death? Anybody remember it?

Careful, they're notorious for not actually stocking the lenses in the shop and then you have the additional expense of having the lens shipped up from their cape town branch.

Yip I also enquired....the 400 f2.8 is in Cape Town and is sent to PE on request. You could use it with a 1.4 or 2 X TC
Dirk, I was also hoping to get a 500 or 600.
The waves always break at the same place cos of the reefs so zoom with feet at low tide.
    I'll be using the 400 f5.6 + 1.4tc
