    Default D-Focus system

For all those DOF fans out there, you need to check out D-Focus' Follow Focus system for SLRs. For about $250 you can get a follow focus system including 3 variable 'rings' for your SLR (no rod system needed!).

To avoid wobbling the camera when pulling focus.

It's not a necessity, but it's very hard to get clean focus pulls, even on a tripod. A follow focus helps to get around the problem.

    Obviously for photography it's useless.

You don't need to pull focus when taking when shooting photographs. However focus are a great filmic effect.

    Aha.

    That makes sense.

I don't have a camera that does video, so that didn't enter my head.
