    Default Help Needed...damaged Hard drive

    Hey there guys and gals

I have a major problem, I dropped my external hard drive from the coffee table and now it seems, from what I can find on the net, the spindle is bent that drives the disk. If that is the case then all data should be able to be retrieved, again from what I have read on the net. If anyone have any advise on what to do, who to contact etc to get this thing saved, its got a couple of thousand pics on it and all my work data. ANY help will be greatly appreciated!

A drop from a coffee table cannot bend the spindle. The drive should be able to handle 350G! If the drive is still "seen" by your PC as a drive, then recovering the data should not be a problem. I would suggest that you check if a cable has become dislodged.
If you are worried about opening the case, don't be. The only connection to the drive inside is the data cable and power (maybe a small connection for the LED).
Now, most important!!! Set up a data backup regimen - replacing a drive is just money, replacing your photos is impossible (until some young Einstein invents a time machine). I have a Seagate Freeagent which I use to backup all my data, and I also make sure that all my photos are copied to both my PCs. It gives me total peace of mind.

Hey thanks, I have opened the device last night allready and I cant see anything wrong, from my limited experiance in PC hardware. The drive is spinning but making a funny sound and its not being picked up by the PC. I am seeing a guy that might be able to help, so lets hold thumbs for the best! The computer places I have been to wants to rush me 5K for data recovery, if you know the feeling of being kicked in the nuts...well thats what it felt like. So if anyone has a contact that could possibly help I would also appreciate it.

I have to learn to read. I saw this and for the moment forgot the thread was about an external drive. Inside a hard disk is one place you dont want to get even the smallest speck of dust.
