    Question Various resolutions

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ18 Lumix which lets me shoot in Raw or .jpeg. When I open the photo properties I see that Raw photos have a resolution of 300 dpi where as the .jpeg photos have a resolution of 72 dpi.

Our son has a new Panasonic DMC-TZ4 and when he uploads photos the photo properties show his photos have a resolution of 180 dpi. which, to me, means his photos are/will be clearer than mine at 72 dpi.

How does his camera generate photos at 180 dpi.?

    Warren,

The DPI setting you see on the image is just a unit of measure and does not impact the actual number of pixels or clarity of the image at all. It is actually related to the output of the file. Computer monitors has a output resolution of around 72 dpi and printers mostly around 300 dpi.

So the same 300 pixels of your image will cover 1 inch when printed at 300 dpi and 4.17 inches on your monitor at 72 dpi.

You can change this setting during the RAW conversion or at any time in Photoshop without losing any pixels or clarity.
